Anghel pointed out that hotel occupancy rates have not met expectations, with current figures tracking below those from the previous year. “We’ve had an inconsistent June,” she explained, predicting an occupancy rate of approximately 65 per cent for the month. “Typically, June is a busy period for Toronto, but this year, many visitors have opted to stay away.”
Challenges in the Hospitality Sector
The anticipation surrounding the World Cup did not guarantee a surge in hotel bookings. Anghel noted that many rooms initially reserved were released back into the market when FIFA made additional tickets available closer to the tournament date. Consequently, this has added to the uncertainty surrounding the economic windfall expected from the event.
Andrew Weir, CEO of Destination Toronto, remained hopeful, suggesting that while June might fall short of initial projections, the rest of the summer could make up for it. Between June 12 and July 2, Toronto is set to host five group stage matches and one knockout game, providing ample opportunity for recovery.
Local Businesses Experience a Boost
Despite the challenges in the hotel industry, some local businesses are already experiencing a positive impact from the influx of visitors. Callam Hald, a restaurant manager, shared that crowds were just beginning to form hours before their establishment’s afternoon game. “We had a lineup this morning and the game wasn’t until 3,” he said, illustrating the immediate benefits for dining establishments.
Anghel noted that the presence of fans has significantly enhanced activity at restaurants and gathering spaces. “Yesterday afternoon, everything from the convention centre to Front Street was bustling with people at patios and hotel lobbies, like the Royal York,” she said, highlighting the vibrant atmosphere that has emerged as a result of the tournament.

Mayor Olivia Chow emphasised the importance of the World Cup for Toronto’s international profile. “The entire world has their eyes on Toronto,” she declared, recognising the event’s potential to showcase the city on a global platform. Yet, it remains to be seen whether the World Cup will deliver the significant economic boost that organisers and local governments have promised.
