The NHS recommends a target of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly, but McGrath advises selecting activities that bring joy. “Our recent survey found that enjoyment is a powerful motivator for many to engage in exercise,” she explained. With the winter’s gloom behind us, summer invites us to rediscover movement in forms that inspire us, whether it’s cycling through the park or enjoying a stroll with friends.

Make Smart Dietary Choices

A balanced diet is one of the most effective means of safeguarding heart health. McGrath pointed out the dangers of excessive sugar, salt, and fat, which can contribute to high cholesterol, hypertension, and weight gain—each a contributor to cardiovascular disease.

Small dietary adjustments can yield significant benefits. “Consider simple swaps in your daily meals,” she suggested. For instance, replacing a sandwich with a salad rich in nuts, chickpeas, and lentils can be a nutritious alternative. Additionally, opting for fruit juice ice lollies instead of traditional ice cream can satisfy sweet cravings while supporting heart health. Stay Hydrated

McGrath recommends maintaining hydration through both beverages and water-rich foods, emphasising that while water is optimal, drinks like squash and even milk can also contribute to fluid intake.

Regular blood pressure checks are essential, especially as many individuals may be unaware of undiagnosed hypertension. “High blood pressure often has no symptoms, yet it places undue strain on the heart, increasing the risk of serious conditions like heart attacks or strokes,” McGrath explained.

Individuals can monitor their blood pressure at home using approved devices or visit local pharmacies or GP offices for assistance. According to NHS guidelines, a reading of 140/90 or higher is generally classified as high. McGrath advises individuals to be proactive about their readings and consult healthcare professionals if levels are concerning.

Keep Cool During Heatwaves

For those with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions, as well as the elderly and children, maintaining a cool body temperature is vital. McGrath expressed that these groups are more susceptible to heat-related issues, including heat stroke.

To combat the heat, she recommends wearing loose-fitting clothing and avoiding outdoor activities during peak sun hours. Keeping homes cool by closing curtains can also help mitigate heat exposure.
