A troubling electrical incident at Cultus Lake Waterpark in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley has resulted in ten young students and two adults being hospitalised, following a school field trip that took a dangerous turn on Monday. The victims, primarily students from Minnekhada Middle School, were treated for injuries that, though serious, were not life-threatening, according to local authorities.

Chaos Unfolds During School Outing

The day started as a celebration for the students, marking the end of the school year, but it quickly descended into chaos. Eleven-year-old Elias Sgouraditis was enjoying the festivities when he noticed a commotion nearby. “I saw people on the ground getting CPR,” he recounted, visibly shaken by the scene. His fears escalated when he observed not only ambulances, but also helicopter air ambulances arriving at the scene. “I thought it must be pretty bad if there were helicopters,” he added.

The Chilliwack RCMP confirmed that a total of twelve individuals were taken to hospital after an incident that unfolded shortly after 11 a.m. Officers quickly determined that the event was not the result of any deliberate action, and the investigation has now been handed over to WorkSafe B.C. for further examination.

Investigation Underway

Ken Hoff, assistant director of communications for the Coquitlam School District, stated that the students were being assessed for unspecified injuries. Most of the victims were from a different school, and despite the alarming circumstances, Elias and his friends were not harmed. After the emergency response concluded, they returned to enjoying the remaining attractions at the park, which continued to operate normally except for a few rides close to the incident site.

Cultus Lake Waterpark has since announced it will temporarily close while a thorough investigation is undertaken. “We are fully co-operating with the authorities through the process of investigation and assessment,” the park stated on social media, expressing a commitment to ensuring such an incident does not recur.

Community Concerns and Parental Outrage

The aftermath of the incident has sparked significant concern among parents. Katy Sgouraditis, Elias’s mother, expressed her relief that her son was unharmed, but her frustration was palpable. “If it had done, I would be super angry and really wanting some answers right now,” she remarked. The incident has left many parents questioning the safety measures in place at the waterpark and the circumstances that led to such a serious event.

Technical Safety B.C., the regulatory body responsible for electrical safety compliance, is also conducting an investigation. Spokesperson Lindsay Byers confirmed that safety officers have been dispatched to assess the situation. BC Hydro has indicated that preliminary findings suggest the electrical issue originated on the customer’s side, not from the utility’s infrastructure.

Why it Matters

This unfortunate incident raises critical questions about safety protocols at public recreational facilities, particularly those frequented by children. The swift response from emergency services undoubtedly saved lives, but it also underscores the importance of rigorous safety standards and thorough investigations to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As families seek clarity and accountability, the waterpark’s commitment to transparency and safety will be pivotal in rebuilding trust within the community.
