Quebec’s road safety landscape presents a paradox as recent statistics from the province’s auto insurance board indicate a decline in fatalities while simultaneously reporting an uptick in injuries from traffic collisions. The latest safety report reveals that in 2025, 371 individuals lost their lives on the roads—eight fewer than the previous year. Despite this positive trend, the number of people involved in accidents surged by 5.7 per cent, totalling over 30,000 incidents.

Decreasing Fatalities, Increasing Incidents

The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) has released its annual report, showcasing a slight decrease in traffic-related fatalities per 100,000 residents, dropping from 4.2 in 2024 to 4.1 in 2025. This decline marks a continued effort towards improving road safety, yet the report highlights a troubling rise in injuries.

In total, serious injuries remained relatively stable, with just one additional case compared to the previous year. However, less severe injuries climbed to 28,365—a significant increase of 1,632 cases. This upward trend raises alarms for safety officials, particularly as the average number of road deaths remains at one per day.

When analysing the data from 2025 against the averages from 2020 to 2024, a concerning increase in fatalities and injuries among two vulnerable demographics has emerged: young drivers aged 15 to 24 and seniors aged 75 and older. These age groups are typically more susceptible to the dangers of road travel, prompting calls for targeted educational campaigns and preventive measures.

Moreover, the report indicates a notable rise in collisions involving heavy vehicles and pedestrians, two areas that have garnered increased attention from safety advocates. Serge Lamontagne, president and CEO of the SAAQ, expressed his concern about these statistics, emphasising the importance of addressing the factors contributing to these trends.

Initiatives to Improve Road Safety

In light of these findings, Lamontagne confirmed that the SAAQ intends to implement more awareness campaigns aimed at reducing both fatalities and injuries. The commitment to enhancing road safety is paramount, particularly as the number of vehicles on Quebec roads continues to grow post-pandemic.

While the overall decline in deaths is promising, the increase in accidents and injuries necessitates a comprehensive strategy to protect all road users, particularly the most vulnerable.

Why it Matters

The implications of these figures extend beyond mere statistics; they reflect the real human cost of road accidents—the lives lost and families irrevocably altered. As Quebec strives to improve its road safety record, the balance between increasing traffic and the need for stringent safety measures becomes ever more critical. The SAAQ’s proactive stance in launching new initiatives demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding the lives of all citizens, making it essential for communities to rally behind these efforts to foster a safer driving environment for everyone.
