Snap Launches New Smart Glasses, Targeting a Fresh Start in Augmented Reality

Snap Inc. has unveiled its latest iteration of smart glasses, named Specs, priced at £1,995 in the UK and $2,195 in the US, marking a significant moment for the company as it attempts to reclaim its footing in the augmented reality (AR) market. This announcement comes nearly a decade after the launch of its original Spectacles, which resulted in substantial financial losses for the firm. The Specs are designed for everyday use, but they come with some caveats. Users can expect an average battery life of four hours, and while a charging case extends usability to 20 hours, this may not be sufficient for all-day wear. The glasses are touted for their “wearability and mobility,” yet the trade-off appears to be a reduced battery performance, which may hinder their appeal compared to smartphones.

One of the standout features includes the ability to watch videos, browse the web, and record content directly through the glasses. However, the technology does raise privacy concerns, especially in light of past incidents involving smart glasses. Spiegel emphasised the importance of user trust, noting that Specs include a built-in indicator light to signal when the device is recording. Users will also have control over their data, including what gets stored or shared.

A Rocky Past and Future Prospects

This isn’t Snap’s first foray into smart glasses. The original Spectacles, launched in 2016, were a commercial failure, leading to a $40 million loss just a year later due to excessive inventory and cancelled orders. Subsequent versions saw improvements but still did not achieve widespread adoption. Snap has since pivoted towards augmented reality, releasing limited editions for select creators rather than the general public.

The launch of Specs arrives amidst a broader resurgence of interest in smart glasses, with competitors like Google and Meta also making strides in this space. However, the shadow of previous failures looms large, and analysts remain cautious about whether Snap can navigate a successful path forward.
