Historically, small glaciers acted as frozen reservoirs, releasing much-needed water during the crucial spring farming season. However, as these vital resources vanish, farmers are left grappling with a relentless desert of dry rock. “Now there is scarcity of water,” Gutme states, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

A Groundbreaking Solution

In response to these challenges, local villages began experimenting with their own ice reservoirs in the early 2010s. This ambitious project involved capturing water from higher elevations during the winter and spraying it into the air, where it would freeze and form impressive towers of ice known as ice stupas. In collaboration with private firm Acres of Ice, the new AIR system employs advanced technology to enhance ice production. This innovative process begins by pressurising water from elevated regions, which is then shot out of a vertical nozzle, creating a mist that freezes upon contact.

Dr. Suryanarayanan Balasubramanian, founder of Acres of Ice, explains how this computer-controlled system operates. “It monitors environmental conditions, including water temperature inside the pipe. If the air temperature drops too quickly, the control system takes action, preventing pipe damage.” This automated response is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the system and maximising ice output.

What sets the AIR apart is its efficiency. Instead of a continuous spray, it delivers bursts of mist, allowing each layer of water to freeze solid before the next application. “Our goal is to convert nearly all of the diverted water into ice,” Balasubramanian adds, showcasing the potential impact of this technology.

Positive Outcomes for Local Communities

The introduction of AIR projects has been met with optimism by farmers. Gutme, who is experiencing the benefits first-hand, expresses hope for the future: “We are planning to build at least two more of these artificial glaciers.” With a more reliable water source, villagers are now witnessing a revival of groundwater and spring sources, enabling them to cultivate their land more effectively.

Murtaza Ali, an executive engineer with the Irrigation and Flood Control Division, points out the significance of this technology: “When we speak to the villagers, they are saying the groundwater is getting recharged, and they are receiving water in time.” This renewed water supply not only supports agriculture but also helps to retain younger generations, who might otherwise migrate to urban areas in search of work.
