Vanessa Hadid, a postdoctoral researcher in psychology at UdeM, emphasises that just because a system can respond in a seemingly empathetic manner, it does not mean it possesses any genuine emotional depth. In fact, the researchers draw on the concept of “blindsight,” where individuals with damage to their primary visual cortex can respond accurately to visual stimuli without conscious awareness of those stimuli. Hadid notes, “A person with blindsight can respond accurately to visual information without the conscious experience of seeing it,” illustrating that processing information does not equate to experiencing it consciously.
The Risks of Anthropomorphism
The researchers warn that as AI capabilities expand, there is an inherent risk in anthropomorphising these technologies. People may begin to ascribe human-like qualities to AI systems simply because they can communicate fluently and appear sensitive to emotional cues. Professor Karim Jerbi, another co-author of the paper, articulates this concern succinctly: “Current AI systems do not feel anything and do not have conscious experience. But the more fluently they speak and the more sensitive they seem to our emotions, the easier it becomes to forget that.”
