Archaeologists have unearthed a significant prehistoric site just three miles from the iconic Stonehenge, revealing an earlier and simpler structure believed to date back around 5,000 years. This newly discovered monument, consisting of two post holes, aligns with the movements of the Sun, echoing the celestial significance of its more famous neighbour.
Discovery Details
The excavation, led by Phil Harding of Wessex Archaeology, has unveiled two holes that once held wooden posts. These posts, now long decayed, were positioned approximately 120 metres apart and may have reached heights between two to four metres. Remarkably, they were aligned to mark the summer and winter solstices, much like the larger stones of Stonehenge.
Harding expressed his excitement, calling this find one of the highlights of his career. “Two post pits tell me much more about the people 5,000 years ago,” he stated. “This reveals insights into their community, their thoughts, behaviours, and their reverence for the heavens.”
Celestial Significance
The alignment of the Bulford structure with the Sun’s path is noteworthy. At Stonehenge, the summer solstice sunrise is visible over the heel stone, while the winter solstice sunset aligns with an altar stone. Similarly, the positioning of the wooden posts at Bulford indicates a deliberate connection to these solar events.
Dr Fabio Silva, an archaeoastronomer from Bournemouth University, elaborated on the astronomical alignment, stating, “By reconstructing the sky as it appeared 5,000 years ago, we can see that the alignment is precisely correct for both the summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset.”
Artefacts Unearthed
The excavation did not only reveal the post holes but also yielded a treasure trove of artefacts, including pottery, flint tools, and animal bones. Among the items was a discoidal flint knife, praised by Harding as a “star find” due to its exceptional craftsmanship. “It was found in an upright position, perhaps suggesting it held symbolic significance,” he speculated.
Radiocarbon dating has confirmed the age of the site, placing it in the same timeframe as the earliest activities at Stonehenge, suggesting that the communities responsible for both sites may have shared a cultural or functional connection.
Historical Context
Dr Jennifer Wexler, curator of history at English Heritage, noted the implications of this discovery. “The findings at Bulford suggest that the people who initiated the construction phases of Stonehenge might have been living or gathering in this area,” she stated.
The fascination with solar phenomena is not surprising. Early farming communities relied heavily on seasonal cycles, making the Sun a critical aspect of their livelihoods. Wexler explained that while today’s solstice celebrations at Stonehenge draw thousands, the winter solstice likely held greater importance for these ancient peoples, marking a time of renewal as daylight began to return.
