As the UK braces for a scorching weekend with temperatures expected to exceed 30°C (86°F), many families are feeling the strain of the summer heat. For parents, ensuring the comfort and safety of their children during these sweltering days can be particularly challenging, especially for babies and young children who are more susceptible to overheating. Here are some practical tips to help keep your little ones cool and safe as the sun blazes down.

Hydration is Key

One of the most effective ways to keep children cool is to ensure they stay well-hydrated. However, getting kids to drink enough water can often feel like an uphill battle. A clever solution is to incorporate hydrating foods into their diet. For children over the age of one, frozen lollies made from water or diluted fruit juice can be a delightful treat. Older kids can benefit from enjoying juicy fruits like watermelon and oranges, while salads, ice creams, jelly, and soups also serve as excellent sources of hydration.

For breastfeeding infants, breast milk typically provides all the necessary hydration, but they may want to feed more frequently during hot spells. For those on formula, offering a small amount of cooled boiled water in addition to their usual feeds can help keep them hydrated.

Sunscreen: Reapply, Reapply, Reapply

It’s crucial to be vigilant about sun protection, especially as children’s skin is particularly sensitive. Experts caution against relying on once-a-day sunscreens, as they often fail to provide the coverage they promise. Even formulations labelled as water-resistant should be reapplied after swimming or excessive sweating.

When selecting sunscreen, look for products with at least SPF 30 and a high star rating. Apply it generously about 30 minutes before heading outdoors, and reapply every two hours, particularly during peak sun hours between 11:00 and 15:00. Don’t forget to cover often-overlooked areas such as the tops of feet, ears, and neck. For infants under six months, the best protection is to keep them in the shade entirely, as their skin is extra fragile.

Seek Shade Whenever Possible

Keeping children in the shade during the hottest parts of the day is one of the simplest ways to protect them from the sun’s harsh rays. If outdoor adventures are unavoidable, consider waiting until later in the day when temperatures begin to drop.

When using a pram or pushchair, avoid covering it with a muslin cloth or blanket, as this can trap heat and create an oven-like environment. Instead, opt for a parasol or sunshade that allows airflow, keeping your child cooler as they enjoy the outdoors.

Dress for Comfort

What your children wear can greatly influence their comfort level during hot weather. Loose-fitting, breathable clothing is essential for keeping them cool. Darker colours can offer better sun protection, while materials like denim and thicker polyester provide a barrier against UV rays.

If you’re planning a trip to the water, consider outfits made from UV-protective swimwear, ideally labelled with UPF 50. Long-sleeved tops with high necks can protect your child’s arms and shoulders, while wide-brimmed hats are a must for shielding their face and neck from direct sunlight. Don’t forget wraparound sunglasses to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays.

Create a Cool Sleep Environment

As the temperature rises, ensuring that your child can sleep comfortably becomes a priority. To keep bedrooms cool during the day, close curtains or blinds and use electric fans to circulate air, though they shouldn’t be directed at sleeping children to avoid dehydration.

A cool bath before bedtime can help lower their body temperature, making it easier for them to drift off. In bed, keep bedding light and minimal, and consider leaving the door or window slightly ajar to encourage a refreshing breeze.

Why it Matters

With rising temperatures becoming a hallmark of summer, it’s vital for families to adopt strategies to keep children safe and comfortable in the heat. By prioritising hydration, sun protection, and proper clothing, parents can ensure their little ones enjoy the joys of summer without the dangers of overheating. These simple yet effective measures not only promote health but also foster a sense of well-being, allowing families to create cherished memories during this vibrant season.
