As the UK braces for a significant heatwave, rail operators are urging passengers to limit travel to essential journeys only. With temperatures predicted to soar to 37°C across southern England and Wales, and potentially reaching up to 40°C in certain areas, the rail network is preparing for widespread disruptions that could severely affect services.
Travel Restrictions Announced
Network Rail has issued a stark warning for commuters to check the status of their trains before embarking on any journeys. The forecasted extreme heat is expected to cause significant issues for the railway infrastructure, particularly for intercity routes connecting London to major cities like Birmingham and Manchester, which are anticipated to be among the hardest hit.
Chiltern Railways, which operates between London and Birmingham, has already cancelled over half of its scheduled services in anticipation of severe disruptions. Jake Kelly, Deputy Chief Executive of Network Rail, emphasised the importance of prioritising safety amidst the adverse weather conditions. He advised, “We’re asking passengers to check before travelling and only travel if absolutely essential. If you must travel, please plan ahead, allow extra time, and bring water to stay hydrated.”
Extreme temperatures can lead to the expansion and potential buckling of steel rails, necessitating slower speeds for trains. Additionally, the intense heat raises the risk of overhead wires sagging or breaking, posing further dangers to the network’s operational integrity.
Ongoing Challenges Following Recent Incidents
The current heatwave is compounding existing challenges on the Midland mainline, where services are still recovering from a tragic collision involving two trains in Bedford last Friday. This incident resulted in the death of a train driver and injuries to approximately 100 passengers, prompting investigations and repair work that are expected to restrict services for the remainder of the week.
Chiltern Railways, operating entirely within the red warning zone, has opted to reduce services to ensure the remaining trains can operate safely, although significant delays are anticipated. Michael Stewart, the Commercial Director at Chiltern Railways, advised passengers to reconsider their travel plans, stating, “Trains are running at greatly reduced levels to ensure everyone’s safety, which means you may experience significant delays and busy conditions.”
Other Operators Follow Suit
LNER, which services the route between London and Edinburgh, has also recommended that passengers avoid travel on Wednesday and Thursday. Both LNER and Chiltern Railways have indicated that tickets booked for these days can be transferred to Friday, allowing flexibility for those whose plans may be disrupted.
