In a significant display of political momentum, New York City’s Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani saw his endorsed candidates triumph in crucial congressional primaries on Tuesday, reshaping the city’s political landscape. This electoral success not only underscores Mamdani’s burgeoning influence within the Democratic Party but also signals a potential shift towards a more progressive agenda as the November elections loom.

A Clean Sweep for Mamdani

Mamdani’s strategic backing proved to be a masterstroke as three of his allies secured victories in their respective primaries. Notably, Brad Lander, the former city comptroller who had previously run for mayor, decisively defeated incumbent Dan Goldman, marking a pivotal moment in NY-10. Lander expressed his enthusiasm, declaring, “What a glorious time to be a New Yorker,” at a celebratory event in Brooklyn, where he was accompanied by Mamdani.

Meanwhile, Claire Valdez, a state legislator and former union organiser, overcame Antonio Reynoso, the choice of outgoing Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, in New York’s seventh district, which spans parts of Brooklyn and Queens. In a remarkable upset, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a public defence investigator, defeated Adriano Espaillat, the five-term incumbent and chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in the 13th district, which encompasses Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. These victories not only reflect a shift in voter sentiment but also bolster Mamdani’s position as a prominent figure within the party.

Jack Schlossberg’s Legacy Falters

In a race that attracted considerable national attention, Jack Schlossberg—grandson of the late President John F. Kennedy—was unable to advance in the Democratic primary for New York’s 12th district. Despite his significant social media presence and ambition to revive the Kennedy legacy, Schlossberg fell short in a competitive field. The primary was ultimately claimed by Micah Lasher, a seasoned politician with a reputation for strategic thinking, setting the stage for a strong campaign against a backdrop of liberal Democratic values.

Notably, other prominent figures in the race included George Conway, a vocal critic of former President Trump, and Alex Bores, a state assembly member, whose candidacies contributed to a politically charged environment, often referred to as an “AI civil war” by observers. Lasher is now favoured to secure the seat in the heavily Democratic district come November.

Moderates Maintain Ground

While Mamdani’s progressive allies celebrated their victories, moderate Democrats also demonstrated resilience in key districts. On Long Island, incumbents Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen successfully fended off primary challenges, ensuring their positions as they prepare for the general election. In the Hudson Valley, Cait Conley, a former White House counter-terrorism official and combat veteran, won a highly competitive primary, positioning herself to challenge Republican Mike Lawler in a district that has shown a penchant for swinging between parties.

Conley, speaking to her supporters, asserted, “No one is coming to save us. We are the cavalry,” encapsulating the urgency felt by many Democrats as they rally for voter support in the lead-up to November.

Trump’s Grip on the GOP

Despite the progressive wave in New York, signs of former President Trump’s enduring influence within the Republican Party were evident. Anthony Constantino, endorsed by Trump, won the Republican primary for the upstate New York 21st congressional district, defeating Robert Smullen, a candidate backed by local party officials. Constantino is now positioned as a strong contender in a district that has historically leaned Republican, following the departure of MAGA supporter Elise Stefanik.

In Maryland, Adrian Boafo emerged victorious in a crowded primary to succeed retiring Congressman Steny Hoyer, while April McClain Delaney narrowly retained her seat in an expensive race against her predecessor, David Trone. Meanwhile, in Utah, moderate Brad McAdams won his primary in a newly drawn Democratic-friendly district, indicating the diverse political landscape across the nation.

Why it Matters

The outcomes of these primaries signal a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party, as the increasing prominence of progressive candidates under Mamdani’s leadership could redefine the party’s platform in the coming years. As voters prepare for the November elections, the juxtaposition of progressive and moderate factions within the party will be crucial in determining not only the future of New York politics but also the broader national narrative. With the Republican Party still tethered to Trump’s influence, the stakes are high for Democrats, who must galvanise their base while appealing to a wider electorate to secure victories in the midterms.
