Calgary Transit is set to enhance its light rail service with the introduction of new light rail vehicles (LRVs), marking a significant upgrade to its fleet. This week, the city will unveil the first three of the modern C10 model vehicles, which will replace some of the oldest cars currently in service. With over 40 years of operation, the older models have reached the end of their functional lifespan and are considered “ripe for decommissioning.”

The new C10 LRVs, also referred to as Mask LRVs, come equipped with an array of modern features designed to improve the passenger experience. Sharon Fleming, director of Calgary Transit, expressed enthusiasm about the new vehicles in a recent press statement. “They’ll be more reliable with lower maintenance costs. They’re a big step up from the original U2 trains that they’re replacing,” she stated, highlighting the benefits of the transition to the C10 model.

The introduction of the C10 LRVs is part of a broader strategy to modernise Calgary Transit’s fleet. Over the next two and a half years, an additional 37 C10 vehicles will be integrated into the system, gradually phasing out the remaining U2 cars, which have been in operation since the 1980s. Currently, Calgary Transit boasts a fleet of 217 light rail vehicles, which will soon see a significant improvement with the inclusion of these new models.
