Mizrahi’s son, Shlomi, spoke of his father at a heartfelt funeral service, sharing how his father was not only a loving parent but also his closest confidant. “He was the most positive person. He always put others before himself. And he was always ready to help anyone in need,” Shlomi Mizrahi recalled.
A Life Dedicated to Helping Others
Michel Mizrahi was caught in a violent confrontation outside a hotel while en route to meet his son for coffee. Eyewitnesses reported that he paused to assist others in reaching safety, an act of selflessness that ultimately cost him his life. “He died a hero because that’s who he was,” Shlomi remarked, highlighting his father’s unwavering commitment to helping those around him.
Hundreds of mourners filled the Paperman & Sons funeral home on Jean Talon Street West, illustrating the profound impact Mizrahi had on his community. Originally from Lebanon, Mizrahi had called Montreal home for over 40 years, where he became a beloved figure known for his kindness and willingness to assist anyone in need.

Among those who gathered to remember Mizrahi was Alain Pereque, a childhood friend from Beirut. The emotional toll of losing his lifelong companion was evident as he reflected on their inseparable bond. “It’s like an emotional roller-coaster,” Pereque expressed, struggling to come to terms with his friend’s sudden passing. He shared memories of their youth and how Mizrahi had moved to Canada to celebrate Pereque’s wedding, never returning to Lebanon.
Rabbi Mendel Raskin, director of the Beth Chabad congregation, echoed the sentiments of many, stating that Mizrahi was a cherished member of the community. “It’s very hard, very hard,” Raskin said, reflecting on the loss felt by all who knew him. Mizrahi, a father of three and grandfather, was also a businessman known for selling men’s suits. Those who frequented his shop remembered his generosity, often giving suits to those unable to pay. “He was always giving, giving and smiling. Everybody loved him,” Raskin noted.

The shooting also claimed the life of Montreal police Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, with another officer left injured in the incident. The alleged perpetrator, 25-year-old Seth Scott Hatfield from Lethbridge, Alberta, was also killed during the altercation.
Rev. Daniel Benlolo from the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of Montreal spoke at Mizrahi’s funeral, commending his bravery in guiding others to safety. “He stayed and asked other people to run away, to escape, to find refuge,” Benlolo stated. “He could have just laid down… he paid the full price for it, unfortunately.” Liel Navi, a bystander who was walking to a nearby restaurant, recounted how Mizrahi’s quick thinking saved her life when he confirmed the presence of gunfire.
