In a landmark decision aimed at expanding its membership, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 529 new individuals to join its ranks. This move, which could nearly double the Oscar voting body compared to a decade ago, highlights the ongoing efforts to diversify and modernise the Academy in the wake of past criticisms. Among the prominent names included in this latest cohort are Jenna Ortega, Jacob Elordi, and Teyana Taylor, who have all made significant contributions to the film industry.

A Growing Family

Should all invitees accept their invitations, the Academy’s total membership will soar to 11,319, with 10,338 individuals eligible to cast their votes in the prestigious awards. This significant enlargement marks a stark contrast to 2016, when the Academy boasted a membership of around 6,000. The push for diversity within the organisation has been particularly pronounced since the #OscarsSoWhite controversy of 2015, which revealed an overwhelming lack of representation among nominees and members alike.

Shifting Demographics

Following this year’s admissions, the male-to-female ratio within the Academy will stand at 64% male and 75% white, although the new class itself is notably more diverse, comprising 42% women and 56% representatives from underrepresented communities. In a notable shift, international members will now account for 22% of the organisation, reflecting a growing global perspective within Hollywood. The Academy affirmed its commitment to inclusivity, stating, “Membership selection is based on professional qualifications, with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion, and equity remaining a priority.”

Noteworthy Additions

Alongside Ortega and Elordi, the Academy has also welcomed a host of other talented individuals. Anthony Ramos, Bill Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, and Stephen Fry are just a few of the other notable figures invited to join. Additionally, filmmakers such as Josh and Benny Safdie, Zach Cregger of “Weapons” fame, and Oliver Laxe, director of “Sirât,” have also received invitations, further enhancing the Academy’s artistic diversity.

In tandem with its growing membership, the Academy has announced new categories for its awards programme, including the inaugural award for casting presented earlier this year and an upcoming Oscar for achievement in stunt design set to debut in 2028. The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 14, 2027, with Conan O’Brien returning as host for his third consecutive year.

Why it Matters

The expansion of the Academy’s membership is a significant step towards rectifying past imbalances and fostering a more inclusive environment in Hollywood. By actively inviting a broader spectrum of voices and perspectives, the Academy not only strengthens its relevance but also enriches the cinematic landscape. This initiative signals a commitment to acknowledging and elevating the contributions of diverse talent, ensuring that the Academy reflects the vibrant tapestry of stories that shape our global culture.
