Canadian actor Michael J. Fox, renowned for his role as Marty McFly in the iconic *Back to the Future* series, has received a prestigious promotion to Companion of the Order of Canada. This honour recognises not only his contributions to the entertainment industry but also his significant advocacy for Parkinson’s research, a condition he has faced since the age of 29. Mr. Fox is among 61 new appointments announced by Rideau Hall on Friday, marking yet another highlight in his remarkable career.

An Iconic Journey of Advocacy

Fox, 65, was initially appointed as an Officer of the Order in 2010. However, the honour has a provision for advancement based on sustained exceptional contributions. His promotion to Companion comes as a recognition of his extensive advocacy work through the Michael J. Fox Foundation, established in 2000, which has driven transformative research aimed at better understanding and treating Parkinson’s disease.

In the citation from Rideau Hall, Fox is praised for “blending selective acting with powerful global advocacy” while maintaining an “unflinching honesty” about his condition. This dual role has allowed him to inspire countless individuals, both within the Parkinson’s community and beyond.

A Humble Reflection

In a heartfelt interview, Fox expressed his deep appreciation for the honour, stating that it is profoundly humbling. He remarked, “I recognise that what I have done means something to people and I respect that, and I’m grateful. I love Canada and I love being included in the Canadian experience.” He also acknowledged his affection for the United States, where he has enjoyed a successful career, but emphasised his Canadian identity, stating, “I wake up in the morning as a Canadian, and I go to sleep as a Canadian.”

Fox also reflected on the importance of honesty in dealing with Parkinson’s, emphasising acceptance as a critical component. “It is what it is. Acceptance is a key to dealing with Parkinson’s,” he explained. “You can be optimistic and be a realist.”

Other Notable Appointees

This year’s appointments included several other distinguished individuals. Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair, who led Canada to its first Olympic gold medal, was also promoted to Companion. Singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt received an Officer designation for her contributions to Canadian culture and support for military families.

The announcement, made by Governor-General Louise Arbour—who recently took office—also highlighted the contributions of various members of Canada’s Black community. Noteworthy honorees include Corrine Sparks, the first Black judge in Nova Scotia, and Philip Akin, celebrated for his extensive work in theatre and television.

Governor-General Arbour remarked on the significance of the appointments, stating, “I am honoured for the first time as governor general to extend my sincere congratulations to all new appointees.”

A Legacy of Change

Among the other remarkable individuals awarded this year were Bishop Andrew Atagotaaluk, the first Inuk diocesan bishop in the Anglican Communion, and retired senator Charlie Watt, a prominent advocate for Indigenous rights. Each of these appointments reflects the diverse contributions of Canadians from various backgrounds and fields.

The total count of those appointed to or promoted within the Order of Canada since its inception in 1967 now approaches 8,800, showcasing a rich tapestry of Canadian achievement and service.

Why it Matters

Michael J. Fox’s elevation to Companion of the Order of Canada highlights the critical intersection of celebrity and advocacy, particularly in the realm of health issues like Parkinson’s disease. His journey serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for many facing similar challenges. By continuing to leverage his platform for advocacy, Fox not only inspires those living with chronic illness but also encourages a broader cultural acceptance of these conditions. As Canada celebrates such remarkable contributions, the recognition of individuals like Fox sparks vital conversations about health, identity, and the role of public figures in driving societal change.
