In a bid to tackle the pressing issue of dental health disparities, an innovative outreach initiative in Vancouver is providing essential dental care to those in need, particularly the city’s unhoused population. Students from Vancouver Community College’s Dental Hygiene programme are collaborating with the Union Gospel Mission (UGM) to offer free dental services, addressing a significant gap in healthcare access.
Bridging the Dental Health Divide
Recent findings from the 2024 Canadian Oral Health Survey reveal alarming statistics: nearly one-third of uninsured individuals suffer from oral pain, a condition that can severely diminish their quality of life. Many low-income residents, particularly those without insurance, are at a heightened risk of dental issues, underscoring the necessity for accessible oral care.
The mobile dental clinic, which opened earlier this year at the UGM’s downtown eastside location, is designed to serve approximately 140 individuals this semester. This initiative not only provides vital dental services but also allows students in the college’s 18-month programme to gain practical, hands-on experience in a real-world setting.
Student Experiences and Challenges
For students like Jade Gallano, who anticipates graduating in August, the experience is both rewarding and challenging. “It feels good to help people in the community, but some clients may present with more pain or untreated dental issues due to their circumstances,” she explained. The process of cleaning teeth for those who have had limited access to care can take up to two hours, but for students, this is invaluable practice.
Bethan Rogac, a dental hygienist and community coordinator at the college, noted that many patients exhibit signs of gum disease, cavities, and other dental problems. She emphasised that some community members require multiple visits to address their needs adequately, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by these individuals.
A Collaborative Effort
The outreach programme is partially funded by Health Canada and is one of three co-operative experiences offered to the college’s 54 students. The UGM collaboration began in mid-April and will continue until the end of July, with students dedicating time for one five-hour shift each week. This initiative aims not only to provide dental care but also to combat the stigma that unhoused individuals often encounter when seeking essential healthcare services.
According to Nick Wells, UGM’s media relations specialist, the presence of dental care within UGM’s facilities fosters a sense of trust among community members. “They know where to find us, and that makes it easier to connect them with the services they need,” he said. The welcoming environment is crucial, as it alleviates the fear of judgement that many individuals face regarding their oral health.
Looking Ahead
Both the college and UGM are optimistic about the programme’s future and are planning to continue this valuable service in the fall, welcoming a new cohort of students. “Everyone deserves access to care, but it remains out of reach for certain populations. Our goal is to dismantle these barriers,” Rogac stated.
