Dutta’s creative journey on that fateful Sunday began with a train ride from Kolkata, armed with a vibrant assortment of balloons awaiting him at the Canning station. “I typically use Sundays to explore new locations and take photographs,” he explains. “On this occasion, the local children were filled with exuberance following the conclusion of their annual school exams.”
His enthusiasm for capturing genuine moments led him to a nearby field, where he encountered a group of children. With the balloons in hand, he encouraged three boys to run and jump, allowing their natural energy and expressions to shine. “I didn’t direct them beyond that initial encouragement,” he recalls. “What unfolded was a beautiful display of childhood spontaneity.”
The Art of Observation
As he reviewed the images later by the banks of the River Matla, Dutta noted the dynamics of the scene before him. “The boys, around nine or ten years old, were running in circles, their laughter echoing in the air,” he describes. “One boy lagged a bit behind, perhaps due to fatigue. This moment inadvertently created a visual balance in my photograph, with two boys soaring in the air on one side and another grounded on the other.”
The subtle contrasts within the frame reflect the joys and challenges of childhood, encapsulating a moment that feels both universal and intimate.

Post-capture, Dutta enhanced his image using basic editing tools on his smartphone. “I made minor adjustments to saturation and contrast,” he explains, aiming to present a vibrant portrayal of life. “My goal was to depict a world where children are free to play under the open sky, celebrating the joy that Sundays bring. It’s a slice of life that many might overlook.”
