Guidelines for Contributors
In an effort to maintain transparency and integrity in the fundraising process, the foundation has established clear guidelines regarding donations. Individual contributions are capped at 10% of the total goal, preventing any single donor from exceeding $5 million. Furthermore, only citizens and permanent residents of Canada are eligible to contribute, while corporate and anonymous donations are expressly prohibited.
The foundation has also launched a dedicated page on its website titled “Restoring 24 Sussex: A National Project for Future Generations,” which outlines the project and offers options for tax-deductible donations ranging from £50 to £1,000. Architectural Competition Announced
In conjunction with the fundraising efforts, the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada will oversee a design competition to select a Canadian architect for the renovation. Prime Minister Carney highlighted the importance of involving top-tier talent in this endeavour, announcing that renowned architect Moshe Safdie will lead the jury responsible for choosing the winning proposal, which is expected to be revealed by Canada Day 2027.
The jury includes esteemed professionals such as Carol Bélanger, city architect for Edmonton; Quebec’s Nicolas Demers-Stoddart; Halifax’s Omar Gandhi; and Patricia Kell, executive director of the National Trust for Canada. Their collective expertise will ensure that the renovation not only respects the heritage of 24 Sussex Drive but also modernises it for future generations.

The residence has fallen into disrepair, and when Justin Trudeau assumed office in 2015, the condition of the property prevented him and his family from moving in. Instead, they opted for Rideau Cottage, situated on the grounds of Rideau Hall, where they have since resided. Prime Minister Carney, who currently lives in Rideau Cottage, has indicated that he does not anticipate moving into the renovated residence, suggesting that the timeline for completion may extend beyond his term in office.
