The dramatic operation unfolded following twin earthquakes that struck the nation on 24 June, claiming the lives of nearly 2,300 individuals and leaving tens of thousands unaccounted for. Hernán Gil, a security guard, was finally freed from the rubble in Catia La Mar, more than 100 hours after rescuers first detected his presence.
