This innovation allows researchers to pinpoint areas most at risk and prioritise their efforts to save precious artefacts. However, each excavation has become a race against time, with decisions made on what historical pieces can be salvaged before they are irretrievably lost to the encroaching waters.

Jamestown is not an isolated case; it exemplifies a broader crisis affecting historic sites along America’s coastlines. Climate Central, a nonprofit organisation focused on climate science, estimates that by 2050, 2.5 million Americans and numerous cherished historical landmarks may face severe coastal flooding due to rising sea levels.

Rob Young, a coastal geologist from Western Carolina University, notes, “The map is changing… and climate change and rising sea levels are making that map change more quickly than it was 100 years ago.” The implications extend beyond archaeological sites, as national parks grapple with increased flooding, eroded landscapes, and restricted access for visitors.

The Urgency for Action

As the climate crisis intensifies, the preservation of Jamestown has become a pressing concern. The island’s sea wall, built in 1902, has been reinforced with massive boulders in an attempt to halt erosion. Yet, even Romo acknowledges that this is merely a temporary measure. “If we do nothing, we’re gonna go from Jamestown Island to Jamestown Islands in the next 50 years,” he warns. “The time to act is now to protect this space and ensure future generations can still learn about and experience the place where American history was made.”
