In a poignant reflection of the climate crisis, Jamestown, Virginia—a site of profound historical significance—faces an existential threat from rising sea levels. The first permanent English settlement in North America, established in 1607, is now in a desperate race against time as archaeologists strive to unearth and preserve its rich legacy before it succumbs to the encroaching waters.

A Historical Treasure Unearthed

As Sean Romo, the director of archaeology for Jamestown Rediscovery, pauses his digging to examine a subtle change in the soil, he senses he might be on the verge of uncovering another crucial element of America’s origin story. “I think it might be a gate,” he muses, aware that every shovelful of earth holds the potential to reveal artifacts that have remained buried since the early 1600s. “You can’t put a shovel in the ground without finding something,” he asserts, highlighting the archaeological treasure trove that lies beneath this historic site.

Jamestown is not merely a relic; it is the birthplace of American democracy and a poignant reminder of the nation’s complex past. It was here that the first representative assembly convened in 1619, where Pocahontas married tobacco planter John Rolfe, and where the first enslaved Africans were brought ashore, marking the inception of systemic slavery in America. “For American history, it’s hard to have more of an impact than Jamestown,” Romo notes. “It all starts here. Without Jamestown, there is no modern United States.”

The Unraveling of History

Despite the ongoing archaeological efforts, Jamestown is facing an increasingly dire situation. Over the last century, sea levels in this region have risen approximately 1.6 feet, and projections indicate a further increase of up to three feet by 2075. The James River steadily erodes one side of the island while expanding wetlands encroach from the other, leading to regular flooding of excavation sites after heavy rains or unusually high tides. “We always have to be meticulous,” Romo explains, “but we do need to pick the pace up because we are under severe threat from climate change. And the real big one for us is flooding.”

The rediscovery of the original James Fort in 1994 sparked an archaeological renaissance, with over five million artifacts uncovered, including glass bottles, pottery, and tools. This wealth of findings has revolutionised historians’ understanding of the early interactions between English settlers, the Powhatan people, and the first enslaved Africans. Yet, with the constant threat of flooding, each excavation has turned into a race against time, forcing researchers to prioritise which parts of history can be salvaged.

The Broader Coastal Crisis

Jamestown’s plight is emblematic of a larger crisis affecting coastal sites across the United States. The relentless burning of fossil fuels has not only warmed the planet but has also accelerated the melting of ice sheets and the thermal expansion of seawater, contributing to global sea level rise. According to Climate Central, an estimated 2.5 million Americans and numerous treasured historical sites will face severe flooding by 2050.

Rob Young, a coastal geologist at Western Carolina University, emphasises the rapid transformation of coastal landscapes due to climate change. “The map is changing,” he states, underscoring the urgency of addressing the challenges posed by rising sea levels. Historic forts and national parks are increasingly inundated, with access to these sites becoming restricted as roads and parking facilities succumb to flooding. Some landscapes, such as the Outer Banks in North Carolina, are eroding so quickly that they are becoming unrecognisable.

The Need for Urgent Action

As the threat to Jamestown intensifies, the preservation of its sea wall, originally constructed in 1902 and recently reinforced with large boulders, offers only a temporary respite. Romo acknowledges the limitations of these measures, knowing that without proactive intervention, Jamestown Island could transform into multiple islands within the next five decades. “The time to act is now,” he urges, “to protect this space and ensure future generations can still learn about and experience the place where American history was made.”

It underscores the urgent need for action to preserve not only archaeological sites but also the narratives they represent. As waters rise and landscapes shift, society must engage in meaningful conversations about which pieces of our history we can safeguard for the future and how we can adapt to the realities of a changing climate. The preservation of Jamestown is not just about protecting the past; it is about ensuring that the lessons learned from history continue to inform our collective future.
