Dave Forster, a 63-year-old patriot who journeyed from Washington state, voiced his disappointment, stating that many state exhibits “sucked.”
The fair features a collection of tents showcasing each state, but the offerings have left some attendees questioning the creativity involved. From a cardboard cutout of a champion goat in Nebraska’s pavilion to a sandpit filled with corn in Illinois, the displays have not lived up to the lofty expectations set by the event’s promotion.
Attendance Boosted by Holiday Weekend
Despite a slow start marred by thin crowds and negative headlines, the holiday weekend brought a surge in attendance. Many visitors travelling from afar expressed their love for the celebration, with one attendee, James Bytner from Virginia, highlighting the significance of freedom that the Fourth of July embodies.
Military flyovers and themed programming, including “Wings of Freedom,” were scheduled throughout the day, adding a patriotic touch to the proceedings. However, this year’s fair has not been without its controversies. Some attendees felt that it had shifted from a celebration of national pride to a politically charged environment, prompting some states, like Oregon, to withdraw participation.
Health Concerns Amidst the Celebrations
As revellers sought refuge from the scorching sun, reports emerged of heat-related illnesses. More than a dozen individuals required treatment, with 11 people hospitalised due to heat-related issues. Families, like one mother with small children, expressed their desire to escape the heat, promising their children air conditioning as they queued for security.
Inside the Arkansas pavilion, a host attempted to engage visitors with a sweepstakes offering cooling towels and fans. Yet, the prevailing sentiment was one of discomfort as attendees sought shade and hydration amid rising temperatures.

The fair has also served as a platform for political expression. Messages scrawled on the walls of the D.C. pavilion reflected the polarising discourse currently gripping the nation, with sentiments ranging from “America is back!!” to “Release the Epstein Files.”
Attendees like John from Florida aimed to steer clear of the political fray, seeking common ground rather than division. He articulated a desire to focus on the essence of the holiday rather than the political undertones that have surfaced during the celebrations.
