Dr Peter Jones, affectionately dubbed “The Bogfather,” has dedicated over three decades to restoring Wales’ vital peatlands, a crucial component in the battle against climate change. His innovative nature-based solutions are gaining traction among policymakers as they address intertwined issues of climate change, flooding, wildfires, and biodiversity loss.
The Significance of Peatlands
Covering a mere 4% of Wales’ land surface, peatlands sequester an astonishing 30% of the country’s terrestrial carbon. However, a staggering 90% of these landscapes are degraded, releasing greenhouse gases rather than capturing them. Healthy peatlands not only act as carbon sinks but also play a vital role in water management, helping to mitigate flooding and serving as natural firebreaks in an era marked by increasing wildfire risks.
Dr Jones’ passion for these unique ecosystems ignited at the tender age of eight during a visit to Cors Caron, a national nature reserve near Tregaron. Now in his 60s, he reflects on how his childhood fascination has evolved. “They’re endlessly interesting,” he says, highlighting their wild characteristics and the complex ecosystems they support.
A Lifelong Commitment to Restoration
The journey to restore Wales’ peatlands has its challenges. Historically viewed as low-value land, these areas were often drained for agriculture or converted into forest. This has led to significant loss of peatland integrity, resulting in erosion and the formation of “peat cliffs.” Dr Jones describes the critical indicators of healthy peatland: a diverse array of grasses, sedges, heathers, and the presence of sphagnum moss, which can retain 20 times its weight in water and is essential for peat formation.
As Jones collaborates with farmers and landowners, he emphasises that restoring peatlands is not just about environmental benefits; it also supports a rich biodiversity. “Healthy peatland is home to a range of animals, including many scarce or threatened species,” he notes. His favourite, the fly orchid found in Anglesey, exemplifies the intricate relationships within these ecosystems, as it deceives male digger wasps into facilitating its pollination.
The Path Forward
Despite the daunting task of restoration, hope is not lost. There are over 100 methods available to rehabilitate peatlands, including blocking drainage systems and reintroducing native vegetation. With proper care, peat can accumulate at a rate of approximately one millimetre annually, making it clear that the restoration process is a long-term commitment. Jones and his team aim to restore around 1,800 hectares of peatland annually by 2030.
Yet, as climate change progresses, the restoration challenge intensifies. Jones warns that decreasing summer rainfall will complicate efforts. “It’s a pressing issue,” he states, highlighting the urgency of the situation. However, he finds solace in the collective efforts of various teams dedicated to this cause. “Every peatland in Wales has a unique story,” he affirms, underscoring the importance of each restoration project.
