Martin Oswell, the director of Burnopfield Cricket Club, recounted the chaotic moments as efforts to remove the bull from the field commenced. “Two local farmers attempted to stop the bull, but it charged at one of them,” Oswell reported. Fortunately, the individual was unharmed, but the situation was undoubtedly tense. “The beast was incredibly fit and athletic, making it quite dangerous,” he added.
Police Intervention and Failed Attempts to Recapture
As the bull rampaged across the pitch, the situation escalated to the point where police were called to assist. In an unexpected turn of events, the bull eventually exited the field of its own accord, allowing the match officials to assess the situation further.
Despite the initial amusement of the players at the unusual interruption, it quickly became evident that resuming the game was impossible. Oswell remarked, “At first, it seemed quite funny, but we never anticipated the match would have to be abandoned.”
Efforts to coax the bull off the field included the bull’s owner bringing a cow in hopes of enticing the runaway back to safety. However, these attempts proved futile as the frightened animal remained elusive, exacerbating the situation.

At the time of the interruption, Burnopfield Cricket Club had posted a score of 226 runs, while their opponents, Hetton Lyons, were at 12 for one. Oswell concluded, “There was no chance that the game was going to restart. The bull was spooked, and we couldn’t get rid of it.” The incident undoubtedly left a mark on what was supposed to be a routine day of cricket.
