As the powerful Super Typhoon Bavi approaches, emergency evacuations are underway across Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. With the storm projected to make landfall early Monday morning, forecasters are warning residents of catastrophic conditions, including winds reaching up to 257 km/h (160 mph) and potentially devastating flooding.

Storm’s Path and Potential Impact

The US National Weather Service (NWS) has classified Bavi as a super typhoon, indicating winds that exceed 130 knots (150 mph). According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), Bavi could unleash winds of 150 knots (173 mph) upon landfall, with gusts potentially peaking at 180 knots (207 mph). The storm is anticipated to pass directly over the islands by Monday afternoon, but destructive weather conditions may commence as early as eight to ten hours before the typhoon’s centre arrives.

Officials have expressed grave concerns regarding the storm’s destructive potential. “The window is rapidly closing to evacuate if directed to do so by local officials,” the NWS warned, stressing that high winds pose a deadly threat to anyone outside.

Evacuations Underway

In preparation for the impending disaster, Guam’s civil defence office has established five evacuation centres across local schools, with a combined capacity of approximately 1,700 individuals. These shelters are primarily designated for the most vulnerable members of the community. However, as of Sunday afternoon, one of the centres had already reached its maximum capacity, forcing authorities to redirect evacuees to alternative sites.

Guam, typically a vibrant tourist destination with a population of around 170,000, is bracing for the worst. Residents are boarding up their homes and businesses, attempting to safeguard their livelihoods against the incoming storm. Pinky Cubacub, 55, shared her distress as she fortified her eatery with $500 (£373) worth of plywood. “I cannot afford to lose so many days. It hurts,” she lamented, underscoring the economic pressures many face in the wake of such disasters.

A Growing Concern

Bavi marks the 11th category four or five tropical cyclone to impact US territories in just the past decade, highlighting a worrying trend. This is one more than the total number recorded over the previous 57 years, pointing to the increasing intensity of storms likely driven by climate change. The current El Niño phenomenon is expected to exacerbate these patterns, increasing the frequency and strength of tropical storms in the region.

Japanese tourist Miku Sakurai, 25, expressed her fears as her return flight to Tokyo was cancelled. “We will stay in the hotel when the storm comes. I am scared,” she said, illustrating the widespread anxiety gripping both residents and visitors.

The Bigger Picture

This year’s typhoon season has already been marked by tragedy, with the earlier super typhoon Sinlaku in April claiming 17 lives and causing an estimated $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) in damages. The ongoing rise in sea surface temperatures is fuelling these powerful storms, driving more moisture into the atmosphere and intensifying their impact.
