The ambitious £8.2 billion AI datacentre project in Lanarkshire, Scotland, has come under scrutiny as revelations suggest it may not be able to meet its energy self-sufficiency goals. Launched with significant fanfare in January, the initiative, led by American firm CoreWeave in collaboration with Scottish company DataVita, was intended to harness renewable energy to power its operations by 2030. However, internal communications reveal that both the government and developers privately acknowledge critical issues regarding power supply.

Current operational sites draw only 25 MW from the grid, and the scale of land required—between 40 and 100 square kilometres—far exceeds their existing planning permissions. Moreover, recent proposals for wind turbines would only fulfil a fraction of the claimed energy needs, casting doubt on the viability of their ambitious timelines.

The designation of Lanarkshire as an AI growth zone is emblematic of the UK government’s desire to position itself as a leader in AI development. However, as the reality of power provision becomes increasingly apparent, the initial optimism appears misplaced.
