Montreal gathered in solemn remembrance as the community paid tribute to Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, a dedicated police officer who tragically lost his life while on duty last month. Thousands filled the Bell Centre to honour Benredouane, whose bravery in the line of duty is being celebrated alongside his cherished roles as a father and a friend. The emotional ceremony highlighted not only his commitment to public safety but also the profound impact of his sacrifice on both colleagues and family.

A Hero’s Final Call

On June 22, the city of Montreal was shaken by gunfire that erupted at a hotel in the Côte-des-Neiges district. Officer Benredouane was among the first responders to a 911 call reporting the incident, despite recently suffering an injury that would have normally kept him off duty. Police Chief Fady Dagher spoke passionately about the officer’s selfless decision to respond to the emergency, stating, “You cut short his murderous rampage. How many people did you save?” Tragically, Benredouane lost his life in the confrontation, alongside civilian Michel Mizrahi, aged 68, and the alleged shooter, Seth Scott Hatfield, 25, from Lethbridge, Alberta.

Chief Dagher acknowledged the heavy toll of the incident, which also left a female officer critically injured. “If you hadn’t been there, and acted so quickly and courageously, how many more deaths would we be mourning?” he asked, underscoring the profound loss felt by the force and the community.

A Legacy of Bravery and Dedication

Benredouane, who was just 34 years old, was remembered not only for his heroism but also for his character. Colleagues described him as brave and fiercely protective of both his peers and the community. Born in Algeria, he had dreamt of a career in law enforcement from an early age. His commitment to the job was evident, with Chief Dagher noting that Benredouane was sought after by various teams within the police force due to his exceptional capabilities. “Everyone wanted him on their team,” he remarked, highlighting Benredouane’s reputation as a dedicated officer at Station 26, which serves the Côte-des-Neiges, Mont-Royal, and Outremont areas.

The officer was a devoted father to a two-year-old son and an unborn child, a fact that moved Dagher to tears as he apologised to the young family for this tragic loss. “Mohamed was so committed, totally available to his colleagues,” he told reporters, emphasising the deep connections Benredouane had fostered in his short career.

A Community United in Grief

Prior to the memorial service, a procession of over 5,000 police officers from across Canada marched through Montreal to honour their fallen comrade. Leading the procession were a bagpipe band and mounted officers, creating a poignant display of solidarity. Participants included officers from Benredouane’s own force, many of whom had travelled from other provinces to pay their respects. The procession also featured a poignant display: one officer carried a police cap on a cushion, while another followed a pickup truck adorned with blue and white flowers.

The outpouring of support extended beyond law enforcement, with community members joining the procession to express their condolences. Nour Gharib, a local resident who brought flowers, expressed her gratitude to all first responders, saying, “I am sending all my thoughts and prayers to his family, may he rest in peace, and I thank all police officers, firefighters and nurses, who are there for us every day.”

Remembering a Life Cut Short

A private memorial was held prior to the public ceremony for those closest to Benredouane, demonstrating the close-knit community ties he had cultivated throughout his life. Growing up in Côte-des-Neiges, he was well-known and beloved in the area, making his untimely death feel all the more personal to those who knew him. Samir Benserradj, a relative, reflected on the overwhelming turnout for the procession, stating, “It was shocking, it was devastating, especially for his direct family.”

As the community continues to grapple with this tragedy, the legacy of Mohamed Lamine Benredouane serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those in service to others.

Why it Matters

The loss of Officer Benredouane is not just a personal tragedy; it reverberates throughout the community, highlighting the risks faced by law enforcement personnel every day. His heroism in the face of danger reminds us of the profound impact that dedicated individuals can have on public safety and community wellbeing. As Montreal reflects on the life of this brave officer, it serves as a call to support those who protect us, recognising the toll that such sacrifices take on families and communities alike.
