In a significant breakthrough for public health, a study conducted in Uganda has demonstrated that a locally produced catnip lotion can repel mosquitoes as effectively as the widely used chemical repellent, Deet. This discovery is particularly timely, given the ongoing battle against malaria, a disease that affects millions globally and claims hundreds of thousands of lives each year.
A Local Solution to a Global Challenge
Researchers from Cardiff University and local Ugandan institutions presented their findings at the Society for Experimental Biology conference in Florence. The study highlights the potential of catnip, or Nepeta cataria, a herb from the mint family, which contains nepetalactone—an active compound that not only delights cats but also deters insects.
The urgency for new mosquito repellents stems from the alarming rise in malaria cases, with the disease infecting approximately 282 million people annually and resulting in around 610,000 fatalities in 2024, predominantly among children in Africa. The increasing resistance of mosquitoes to conventional insecticides and the efficacy of frontline antimalarial drugs further underscore the need for innovative solutions.
Field Trials and Findings
The research involved both laboratory evaluations and field trials in eastern Uganda. Volunteers tested various formulations, including Deet and two concentrations of catnip oil—2% and 6%. Results indicated that the 6% catnip lotion performed comparably to Deet, while the 2% formulation was nearly as effective.
Dr Simon Scofield, a senior lecturer at Cardiff University, stated, “We found that a 6% catnip oil was just as effective as Deet, and the 2% catnip oil was only marginally less effective.” He emphasised the affordability of the catnip product, which could be produced by local communities, making it accessible to rural populations who often cannot afford commercial repellent products.
Sustainable Production and Community Involvement
The study’s framework included the establishment of a community enterprise to manufacture the catnip lotion. Currently, the product is distributed free of charge, aided by grant funding. However, plans are underway to scale production to create a self-sustaining model that will provide affordable repellent while generating income for local workers.
Dr Scofield noted, “Once we know that we can sell and distribute the repellent at a low cost, that should generate a self-sustaining system where the money is flowing back to everybody at each stage in the development.”
Expert Opinions and Future Directions
Swai Kyeba, an entomologist from the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania, acknowledged the importance of developing cost-effective vector-control tools. He pointed out, however, that reliance on topical repellents can be problematic due to low compliance rates, as they require frequent reapplication. Kyeba called for further research into the current usage of available repellents in Ugandan households before scaling up production of the catnip lotion.

By harnessing local resources in the form of catnip, communities can gain access to effective mosquito repellents while also benefitting economically from their production.
