In May, YoungTek Solutions faced a similar £600,000 fine for its own age verification shortcomings, and another company was fined £1.35 million for failing to enforce age checks. Despite these efforts, Ofcom itself has come under fire for its enforcement strategies. There have been questions regarding the effectiveness of monetary penalties, particularly when it was revealed that a company fined £1 million had not engaged with the regulator until after the fine was issued. New Investigations and Future Compliance
In response to continuing issues, Ofcom has opened a new investigation into another adult site, Bit Hive, amid concerns about the effectiveness of its age verification methods. The regulator has established various ways for sites to verify users’ ages, including credit card checks, photo ID verification, and age estimation through selfies. Each method must be “technically accurate, robust, reliable and fair,” according to Ofcom’s guidelines.
While Fapello has now restricted access for UK users, Ofcom is actively monitoring compliance across the board and is prepared to take further action where necessary. The message is clear: the days of lax age checks in the adult content sector are over.
