As Great Britain grapples with its third heatwave of the year, the National Energy System Operator (Neso) has issued a warning regarding potential strains on the electricity grid. With households across the country relying heavily on fans and air conditioning units to combat soaring temperatures, the demand for power has surged, prompting Neso to seek additional supplies from electricity generators.
Increased Demand for Electricity
The latest warning comes as southern England is expected to experience temperatures reaching 34°C on Thursday. While this forecast falls short of the record 37.7°C recorded in Lingwood, Norfolk, on 27 June—a figure that shattered the previous June record of 35.6°C set in 1976—the prolonged duration of this heatwave is anticipated to last for over ten days. The Neso has highlighted that the extreme weather conditions across Europe are contributing to the tight margins in electricity availability, as some generation sources are being affected.
In a statement, Neso emphasised its role in maintaining the stability of the electricity system. “We are giving participants the opportunity to make any additional generation or flexibility available during the forecast period,” the operator noted. They assured the public that while the electricity margins are tight, there is no immediate risk of supply interruptions. However, the situation may necessitate Neso to procure electricity at higher-than-average rates from gas power plants to meet the rising demand.
Challenges for Nuclear Power Generation
The heatwave’s impact is not limited to the UK; it has also affected energy supply across the Channel. French state utility EDF has reported that the heat is placing significant pressure on its nuclear reactors. These facilities, which typically export power to the UK and Germany, are facing operational challenges due to rising river temperatures that are essential for cooling processes. EDF has indicated that it may need to reduce output at up to five of its nuclear plants in the coming days, potentially leading to a decrease in electricity exports.
The company plans to operate only two reactors this week as part of an initial response to the heat-induced operational constraints. This measure may be the beginning of a series of reductions as the heatwave continues to impact energy production across Western Europe.
