In a remarkable turn of events, Josef Buttigieg, a biology professor at the University of Regina, has transformed from an academic into a thriving farmer, creating a unique community space in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. His story is a testament to the unexpected paths life can take, showcasing the intersection of education, agriculture, and environmental awareness.

A New Chapter Begins

Buttigieg, originally hailing from Toronto, arrived in Saskatchewan in 2017 with the intention of pursuing a teaching career while briefly escaping the hustle of urban life. What began as a planned temporary retreat soon blossomed into a full-fledged agricultural venture. “The farm was supposed to be an acreage,” he reflects. “I wanted to have a farm because you can do much more with a farm than you can do with a lakeside acreage.”

Initially, the idea was modest, with just a few animals to start. With a PhD in neurophysiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Buttigieg sought the slower pace of farm life. However, as he became more involved in the farming community, what was meant to be a side project took on a life of its own.

The Evolution of Fenek Farm

The turning point came when friends learned of Buttigieg’s farming activities and expressed interest in visiting. “Some people got wind that I had a farm and said, ‘Hey, can you raise some chickens?’” he recalls. This simple inquiry ignited a series of events that led to the establishment of farm tours in 2018, initially aimed at entertaining his daughter’s friends.

“I thought, ‘We’ll just do this for fun, some gas money-slash-beer money on the side, this will be great,’” Buttigieg explains. But as word spread, interest in tours surged, prompting him to consider the viability of this unexpected venture. “All of a sudden, we had people banging down the door for that,” he adds.

Now, Fenek Farm welcomes hundreds of visitors each week, showcasing over 300 animals, including sheep, rabbits, birds, and alpacas. The farm has evolved into a vibrant community hub, offering a variety of activities such as hayrides, petting zoos, and educational events, all designed to foster a connection between people and agriculture.

Commitment to Accessibility and Education

Buttigieg is passionate about making his farm accessible to everyone, ensuring that activities are affordable and inclusive. He prioritises ethical pricing for goods and has made the hayrides wheelchair-friendly, reflecting his commitment to community engagement.

“My children are growing up in a very different environment than I did, but I hope they develop an open and hard-working mindset as they experience life on the farm,” Buttigieg notes. He encourages visitors to approach their time at Fenek Farm with an open mind, as unexpected experiences await. “You never know what you’re going to find when you come out to the farm. You might see a baby being born, a swarm running, or sheep running loose and dogs being worked,” he enthuses.

The Future of Fenek Farm

As Fenek Farm continues to grow, Buttigieg is keen to explore new opportunities for engagement and education within the community. His journey reflects not only a personal transformation but also a broader narrative of how urban individuals can reconnect with the land and promote sustainable practices through education and accessibility.

Why it Matters

Buttigieg’s story is a poignant reminder of the importance of community, education, and environmental stewardship. In an era where urban living often distances people from the agricultural roots of society, his journey exemplifies how individuals can foster connections with nature while promoting sustainable practices. Fenek Farm stands as a beacon of hope, uniting education and agriculture in a way that benefits both the local community and the environment, ultimately inspiring others to consider their relationship with the land.
