Josef Buttigieg’s journey to becoming a farmer was anything but conventional. Initially drawn to Saskatchewan in 2017 for a teaching position at the University of Regina, the Toronto native sought a temporary respite from urban life. What started as a brief escape soon blossomed into a thriving agricultural venture that has captured the hearts of many in the community.

The Initial Dream: A Temporary Retreat

Buttigieg and his family envisioned owning an acreage, a serene alternative to the bustling city, akin to what others might seek in a cottage by the lake. “The farm was supposed to be an acreage,” Buttigieg recalled. “I wanted to have a farm because you can do much more with a farm than you can do with a lakeside acreage.” The plan was modest—beginning with a few animals—but the allure of rural life soon took hold.

With a PhD in neurophysiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Buttigieg was poised to embrace the slower pace of country living. However, as fate would have it, this temporary sojourn transformed into a lasting commitment.

An Unexpected Turn: Embracing Farm Life

As word spread about Buttigieg’s new venture, he began receiving requests from locals interested in farm tours. “Some people got wind that I had a farm and said, ‘Hey, can you raise some chickens?’” he shared. What began as a casual suggestion quickly spiralled into a burgeoning interest, leading him to open the farm for tours in 2018, initially for his daughter’s friends.

“I thought, ‘We’ll just do this for fun. Some gas money-slash-beer money on the side, this will be great,’” he explained. To his surprise, the tours proved to be a hit. “All of a sudden we got people knocking on the door saying, ‘Hey, can we come take a look at the place?’”

Despite his initial reservations about whether there was a market for farm tours, the enthusiastic response from the public confirmed that he had indeed tapped into something special.

A Flourishing Community Hub

Today, Buttigieg’s farm welcomes hundreds of visitors each week. With over 300 animals—ranging from sheep and alpacas to rabbits and dogs—the farm has evolved into a multifaceted attraction. It offers a variety of activities, including a petting zoo, hayrides, and event hosting, all of which are detailed on their website.

Accessibility and affordability are key principles for Buttigieg. He prides himself on ensuring that the farm provides an inclusive experience, with wheelchair-friendly activities and ethically priced goods. “I hope my children sustain an open, hard-working mind as they grow on the farm,” he stated, reflecting on how different this lifestyle is from his own upbringing.

Visitors are encouraged to approach their experience at the farm with an open mind. “You never know what you’re going to find when you come out to the farm. You might see a baby being born, there might be a swarm running, or you might see sheep running loose and dogs being worked,” Buttigieg noted, inviting guests to engage with the unpredictability of farm life.

Building Connections Through Education

Buttigieg’s vision extends beyond entertainment; he aims to foster a connection between urban dwellers and the agricultural world. By opening his farm to the public, he seeks to educate people about farming, animal husbandry, and the importance of sustainable practices. This initiative not only supports local biodiversity but also promotes an understanding of where food comes from, addressing the disconnect many have with agricultural life.

The farm’s success is a testament to the growing interest in sustainable practices and local food production. As urban populations continue to rise, initiatives like Buttigieg’s offer a valuable glimpse into the significance of agriculture in our lives.

Why it Matters

Josef Buttigieg’s transition from professor to farmer underscores the potential for unexpected life changes to lead to fulfilling paths. In an era where urban life often overshadows rural realities, his farm serves as a vital link between communities and the land. By embracing agriculture, Buttigieg not only enriches his own life but also nurtures a deeper appreciation for farming among visitors, paving the way for a more sustainable and connected future.
