A family holiday in Morocco has turned into a heartbreaking ordeal as seven-year-old Inaayah Makda from Blackburn, Lancashire, has gone missing after being swept out to sea on her first day at the beach. The incident occurred on Wednesday in Casablanca, where Inaayah was struck by a powerful wave while she and her parents were perched on rocks.

Inaayah’s parents, Zubair and Tasneem Makda, were also caught in the tumultuous waves but lost sight of their daughter after the force of the water separated them. According to a family member, the couple spent agonising hours on the beach calling for Inaayah, but they received minimal assistance from local authorities during the frantic search.

The family had just begun their week-long holiday when disaster struck. Initial reports suggest that the tide appeared to be far out upon their arrival, only to rapidly encroach upon the beach within approximately 20 minutes, catching the family off guard. “There were no warnings or signs for tourists,” lamented the relative, highlighting the lack of safety measures in place.

Community in Shock

As the search continues, concern and support have poured in from the community. Inaayah, described as a “lovely, bubbly, cheeky little girl” by a neighbour, is the only child of her devoted parents, who are reportedly still in Casablanca seeking help. Gillian Wilton, the head teacher at Inaayah’s primary school, Roe Lee Park, expressed her sorrow, stating, “Our immediate and heartfelt thoughts are with her, her parents and family at this devastating time.”

The local MP, Adnan Hussein, has expressed his heartbreak over the incident and is actively liaising with UK authorities, including the Foreign Office, to ensure that every possible resource is being mobilised for the search operations. “I am urgently raising this matter with the UK authorities to support the search efforts and to provide the family with all the assistance they require at this deeply distressing time,” he stated.

Government Assistance

In response to the situation, a spokesperson from the Foreign Office confirmed that they are providing support to Inaayah’s family and are in contact with local authorities in Morocco. They have pledged to assist in any way possible during this harrowing time for the Makda family.

The family has also engaged a private search operator to aid in locating Inaayah, including the use of a helicopter to cover larger areas of the coastline.

Why it Matters

This tragic incident underscores the importance of beach safety and the need for adequate warning systems in tourist destinations. As families venture to enjoy their holidays, the absence of clear safety measures can lead to devastating consequences. The Makda family’s ordeal is not just a personal tragedy; it highlights the critical need for awareness and preparedness to prevent similar incidents in the future. As the search for Inaayah continues, communities and authorities alike are reminded of the fragility of life and the urgent need for vigilance in ensuring safety for all holidaymakers.
