In an inspiring tale of serendipity, Josef Buttigieg, a biology professor at the University of Regina, has turned what was intended to be a brief retreat from city life into a thriving farm operation that engages the local community. Relocating from Toronto to Lumsden, Saskatchewan, in 2017, Buttigieg initially envisioned his new venture as a simple investment rather than a full-time commitment. However, his journey into farming has blossomed into a popular destination for those eager to connect with rural life.

From Academia to Agriculture

Buttigieg’s transition from academia to agriculture was not a planned one. Having earned a PhD in neurophysiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, he sought relief from the hustle of urban living. “The farm was supposed to be an acreage,” he reflects. “Like some people have cottages, I wanted a farm because you can do much more with a farm than with a lakeside property.”

What started as a modest undertaking with a few animals quickly evolved. As local interest piqued, Buttigieg found himself inundated with requests from those curious about farm life. “Some people got wind that I had a farm and said, ‘Hey, can you raise some chickens?’ One thing led to another,” he recounts, hinting at the organic growth of his enterprise.

Expanding Horizons: Farm Tours and Community Engagement

In 2018, just a year after acquiring the land, Buttigieg opened the farm to visitors, initially offering tours to his daughter’s friends. “I thought, ‘We’ll just do this for fun—some gas money-slash-beer money on the side,’” he admits. Yet, the response was overwhelming. “They had fun and told their friends. All of a sudden, we had people knocking on the door saying, ‘Hey, can we come take a look at the place?’”

Despite initial doubts about the viability of farm tours, Buttigieg soon realised the appetite for such experiences. “All of a sudden we had people banging down the door for that,” he says, reflecting on the unexpected success of the initiative. Today, the farm welcomes hundreds of visitors each week, offering a diverse array of activities that include petting zoos, hayrides, and various events.

A Commitment to Accessibility and Sustainability

At the heart of Buttigieg’s farm is a commitment to accessibility and affordability. He takes pride in ensuring that all visitors can enjoy the farm’s offerings without financial strain. “We price our goods ethically,” he asserts, adding that activities like the hayrides are designed to be wheelchair-friendly.

Raising his children on the farm presents a stark contrast to his own upbringing, yet Buttigieg hopes that this environment instils in them a sense of hard work and openness. He encourages visitors to come with an adventurous spirit. “You never know what you’re going to find when you come out to the farm,” he says. “You might see a baby being born, or you might see sheep running loose and dogs being worked.”

The Farm’s Growing Legacy

With over 300 animals, including sheep, rabbits, and alpacas, the farm has become a vibrant hub of activity. From educational tours to community events, Buttigieg is dedicated to fostering a connection between urban dwellers and agricultural practices. His website lists the diverse offerings available, inviting the public to experience the joys of farm life.

As the farm continues to grow, Buttigieg remains focused on its mission: to create an inclusive, engaging environment that bridges the gap between city and country living. He encourages all, “Come with an open mind,” as each visit promises a unique experience.

Why it Matters

Buttigieg’s journey highlights the importance of community and environmental stewardship in the face of urbanisation. By transforming a simple farm into a community-centric space, he not only promotes agricultural awareness but also fosters a deeper connection between people and the land. In a time when many are seeking solace in nature, his work stands as a testament to the potential of rural enterprises to enrich lives while promoting sustainable practices. As cities grow, initiatives like Buttigieg’s are crucial for maintaining the balance between urban expansion and the preservation of our agricultural heritage.
