The situation remains critical, with the outbreak still in its “expansion phase,” as stated by the WHO. Frontline Workers Under Siege

In a glimmer of hope, the Partners treatment trial has commenced, featuring two potential life-saving drugs: remdesivir and MBP134. Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either drug, a combination of both, or standard supportive care. Remdesivir, an antiviral developed by Gilead Sciences, and MBP134, a monoclonal antibody from Mapp Biopharmaceutical, aim to reduce mortality rates among those infected.
Professor Laurens Liesenborghs of the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, who is overseeing the trial, expressed cautious optimism. “These two drugs have shown great efficacy against the Bundibugyo virus in animal models,” he said. “Our goal is to determine if they can lower mortality rates in humans.”
The trial design allows for the addition of other treatments as they become available, with a target of enrolling between 700 and 1,000 patients.
