In a remarkable twist of fate, Josef Buttigieg has transitioned from a life dedicated to academia to managing a thriving farm in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. Originally from Toronto, the University of Regina biology professor sought a quieter lifestyle when he arrived in 2017, little knowing that his temporary escape would evolve into a flourishing venture that welcomes hundreds of visitors each week.
A New Chapter in the Prairies
Buttigieg’s journey began with a simple desire for a rural retreat. “The farm was supposed to be an acreage,” he recalls, describing his initial vision. “How some people have cottages, I wanted to have a farm because you can do much more with a farm than you can do with a lakeside acreage.” This vision took root as he and his family settled into their new life, exploring the possibilities of agricultural investment.
Initially, the farm started modestly, with a few animals. Buttigieg, who holds a PhD in neurophysiology from McMaster University, was eager to embrace a slower pace of life. However, as word spread about his new endeavour, he found himself unexpectedly inundated with requests for farm tours. “Some people got wind that I had a farm and said, ‘Hey, can you raise some chickens?’”
The Birth of Fenek Farm
What was meant to be a casual venture quickly blossomed. In 2018, Buttigieg opened his farm to visitors, beginning with tours for his daughter’s friends. “I thought we’d just do this for fun—some gas money-slash-beer money on the side,” he explains. To his surprise, the tours became popular, prompting an influx of guests eager to experience farm life.
“I wasn’t sure if there was a market for farm tours,” he admits. However, the enthusiastic response from visitors convinced him otherwise. “All of a sudden, we had people banging down the door for that,” he says, reflecting on the farm’s rapid growth.
Today, Fenek Farm boasts over 300 animals, including sheep, birds, rabbits, and alpacas, and attracts hundreds of visitors each week. The farm offers a range of activities, including a petting zoo, hayrides, and special events, all aimed at providing an immersive agricultural experience.
Commitment to Community and Accessibility
Buttigieg is not only focused on expanding his farm’s offerings but also on ensuring that they remain accessible and affordable. He prioritises ethical pricing for goods and activities, ensuring everyone in the community can participate. The hayrides, for instance, are designed to be wheelchair-friendly, a testament to his commitment to inclusivity.
Raising his children on the farm presents a stark contrast to his own upbringing, but Buttigieg hopes they will develop a strong work ethic and an appreciation for nature. “I want them to have an open, hard-working mind as they grow up here,” he shares.
Visitors are encouraged to approach their farm experience with an open mindset. “You never know what you’re going to find when you come out to the farm,” Buttigieg says. “You might see a baby being born, or a swarm running, or sheep running loose with dogs being worked.” It’s this unpredictability that adds charm to their farm tours.
A Vision for the Future
With the success of Fenek Farm, Buttigieg envisions further growth, potentially expanding educational programmes and community events. His journey underscores not only the adaptability required in today’s world but also the importance of connecting with nature and community.
As he continues to balance his academic career with his newfound agricultural passion, Buttigieg illustrates a poignant narrative of personal evolution—one that celebrates the intersection of education, community, and the environment.
Why it Matters
Buttigieg’s story highlights a growing trend of urban professionals seeking refuge in rural lifestyles, reflecting a broader societal shift towards sustainable living and community engagement. As more individuals and families reconnect with agriculture, it fosters an appreciation for local ecosystems and the importance of sustainable farming practices. In a time when environmental concerns are paramount, initiatives like Fenek Farm serve as vital educational resources, bridging the gap between urban life and agricultural realities.
