From Urbanite to Farm Owner
Buttigieg’s journey to farming was not part of his life plan. Originally from Toronto, he arrived in Saskatchewan in 2017 to take up a teaching position. “I wanted a temporary escape from city life,” he recalls. Initially, the farm was envisioned as a modest acreage, akin to a lakeside retreat. “I thought I could do more with a farm,” he explains, highlighting the potential for growth and sustainability that a farm presents compared to traditional cottage ownership.

However, the response was overwhelming. “All of a sudden, we had people banging down the door for that,” he recalls, surprised by the enthusiasm from the community. Today, Fenek Farm welcomes hundreds of visitors each week, showcasing over 300 animals, including sheep, birds, rabbits, and alpacas. The farm not only offers guided tours but also features a petting zoo, hayrides, and various events, all designed to foster a connection between visitors and the rural lifestyle.
