Originally hailing from Toronto, Buttigieg moved to Saskatchewan in 2017, seeking a temporary reprieve from urban life. What began as a quaint investment in an acreage has blossomed into Fenek Farm, a vibrant hub for families and children eager to connect with nature and farm animals.
From Urbanite to Farmer
Buttigieg’s journey into farming was not part of his original plan. After relocating to Lumsden, Saskatchewan, he aimed to escape the frenetic pace of city life and explore a different lifestyle. “The farm was supposed to be an acreage,” he reflects, expressing his preference for the versatility of farming over a lakeside retreat. Initially, he started small, with just a handful of animals, finding solace in this slower-paced existence.
However, what Buttigieg anticipated as a short-term escape soon evolved into a long-term commitment. As word spread about his farm, requests poured in from locals, asking if he could raise chickens and other livestock. “One thing led to another,” he recalls, revealing how this unexpected turn of events shifted the trajectory of his life.
Building a Community Hub
By 2018, Buttigieg opened the doors of Fenek Farm to visitors, initially welcoming school friends of his daughter. “I thought, ‘We’ll just do this for fun. Some gas money-slash-beer money on the side, this will be great,’” he admits. The response was overwhelming; families and children flocked to the farm, eager to experience rural life firsthand.
What was meant to be a casual venture quickly turned into a flourishing business. “All of a sudden we had people banging down the door for that,” he says, highlighting the unexpected demand for farm tours. Now, the farm draws hundreds of visitors each week, showcasing over 300 animals, including sheep, alpacas, and rabbits, alongside a wealth of activities such as petting zoos, hayrides, and community events.
Commitment to Accessibility and Education
Buttigieg places a strong emphasis on making his farm accessible and affordable for all. He is dedicated to ensuring that visitors can engage with the farm experience without financial strain. Pricing for goods and activities is kept reasonable, and facilities, including hayrides, are designed to accommodate those with mobility challenges.
Raising his children on the farm contrasts sharply with his own upbringing in the city, yet Buttigieg hopes they will cultivate an appreciation for hard work and the natural world. He encourages visitors to approach the farm with an open mind, as the experience can be filled with surprises. “You never know what you’re going to find when you come out to the farm,” he muses. “You might see a baby being born, or sheep running loose with dogs being worked.”
