In an inspiring turn of events, Josef Buttigieg, a biology professor at the University of Regina, has transformed a temporary escape from urban life into a thriving farm operation in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. What began in 2017 as a brief respite from his bustling Toronto upbringing has evolved into a community hub, offering educational tours and a unique connection to rural life.
A New Chapter Begins
Buttigieg, who holds a PhD in neurophysiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, initially sought the tranquillity of farm life as an antidote to the fast-paced environment of city living. He envisioned an acreage that would function as a farm, providing more opportunities for engagement than a simple lakeside retreat.
“The farm was supposed to be an acreage,” Buttigieg recounts. “How some people have cottages, I wanted to have a farm because you can do much more with a farm than you can do with a lakeside acreage.” The modest idea soon expanded as he began acquiring animals and embracing the slower rhythm of rural life.
An Unforeseen Transformation
What was intended as a temporary venture quickly turned into a significant commitment. “Some people got wind that I had a farm and said, ‘Hey, can you raise some chickens?’” Buttigieg reflects. This initial inquiry marked the start of a burgeoning interest that led to an unexpected turn in his career.
In 2018, just a year after settling on the land, Buttigieg opened his farm to the public, initially welcoming his daughter’s friends for informal tours. “I thought, ‘We’ll just do this for fun. Some gas money-slash-beer money on the side, this will be great,’” he explains. However, word spread quickly, and soon, they were inundated with requests for visits. “All of a sudden, we had people banging down the door for that,” Buttigieg adds.
A Flourishing Community Hub
Today, the farm, aptly named Fenek Farm, attracts hundreds of visitors each week and is home to over 300 animals, including sheep, rabbits, birds, and alpacas. The operation offers a variety of activities, from petting zoos to hayrides, and even hosts events and private parties.
Buttigieg has made it a priority to ensure that his farm experience is both accessible and affordable. “We price our goods ethically and make sure activities like the hayrides are wheelchair-friendly,” he states, emphasising his commitment to inclusivity.
Raising his children on the farm has been a stark contrast to his own upbringing, yet he hopes they will imbibe the values of hard work and openness that come with rural life. “You never know what you’re going to find when you come out to the farm,” he encourages prospective visitors. “You might see a baby being born, or dogs working, or sheep running loose.”
The Farm Experience: A Unique Opportunity
Fenek Farm’s appeal extends beyond mere animal encounters; it serves as an immersive educational experience. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the animals and learn about farm operations, all while enjoying a day out in the fresh air. The website provides comprehensive details about the offerings, ensuring that anyone interested can plan a visit with ease.
“Come with an open mind,” Buttigieg advises. The unpredictability of farm life is part of its charm, offering a glimpse into a world that is often distant from urban dwellers.
Why it Matters
Buttigieg’s journey underscores the profound connection between urban and rural communities, illustrating how one individual can bridge the divide through passion and purpose. His farm not only serves as a vital educational resource but also fosters community engagement, promoting environmental awareness and appreciation for agriculture. In a world increasingly driven by technology, Fenek Farm stands as a reminder of the importance of reconnecting with nature and the simple joys of life.
