As of 9 July 2026, the DRC’s Ituri province has reported 1,792 confirmed cases of Ebola, with 625 deaths attributed to the outbreak. The situation remains critical, with the World Health Organization (WHO) noting that the virus is in an “expansion phase.” The absence of an approved vaccine or treatment has left healthcare workers resorting to traditional methods of case identification and isolation, while community mistrust complicates their efforts.
Neema Haba, a local mother and banana seller, voiced her frustration, stating, “I hope these drug trials proceed quickly. Innovative Drug Trial Launches
The Partners treatment trial has commenced with two promising drugs: remdesivir and MBP134. These treatments will be compared against standard supportive care, with patients randomly assigned to receive one of the experimental drugs, a combination of both, or standard treatment. Remdesivir, an antiviral developed by Gilead Sciences, and MBP134, a monoclonal antibody from Mapp Biopharmaceutical, have shown efficacy in animal studies against the Bundibugyo strain.
Professor Laurens Liesenborghs from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp is hopeful about the trial’s potential. “These two drugs have been proven effective in animal models, and we are eager to see if they can lower mortality rates in humans,” he explained. Historically, Bundibugyo Ebola has a lower mortality rate compared to the Zaire strain, yet it remains fatal for approximately one in three individuals infected.
Community and Health Worker Challenges
Despite the rapid establishment of the treatment trial, frontline health workers face daunting challenges. Reports indicate that community mistrust and a lack of financial support have led some workers to halt their efforts. Ovide Maliabo, a driver for a burial team, described the risks, stating, “At one point, we narrowly escaped being lynched. It’s a shame that we aren’t being financially supported.”
Moreover, the closure of local transport routes has hampered the distribution of vital supplies, further complicating the response to the outbreak. Health officials are working under immense pressure, as they must not only manage patient care but also rebuild trust within the community.
Hope for the Future
The trial’s design allows for the inclusion of additional treatments as they become available, with an anticipated enrolment of 700 to 1,000 patients needed to ascertain the effectiveness of the drugs.
