City councillor Nrinder Nann noted the overwhelming public response, stating, “Folks have concerns, fears and anxieties. The best way to deal with that is to give people information.”

The protests in Hamilton and Île-des-Chênes are emblematic of a larger movement across Canada, where communities are increasingly wary of the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. Critics like André Côté, executive director of the Dais think tank at Toronto Metropolitan University, argue that the government is grappling with a public that is increasingly sceptical of AI’s benefits.

“Are we ready for the social consequences?” Côté asked, highlighting the importance of public engagement in shaping the future of AI.
