A devastating fire in a Bangkok bar has claimed at least 27 lives and left 25 others in critical condition. The inferno erupted late on Sunday night in the bustling Chatuchak district, rapidly engulfing the establishment and trapping patrons inside. Eyewitness accounts reveal scenes of chaos as customers attempted to escape the flames and smoke that filled the venue.

A Night of Horror in Chatuchak

The fire broke out near the stage area of the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar, quickly spreading through the building. Witnesses reported that the blaze cut power and filled the venue with smoke, prompting a frantic rush for the exits. Video footage circulating on social media captured the harrowing moments as terrified patrons fled, some suffering severe burns as they escaped the inferno.

Firefighters arrived shortly after midnight and managed to extinguish the blaze within about 30 minutes. However, the aftermath revealed a grim reality. Most of the victims were discovered in a bathroom, where they had sought refuge during the chaos. “When the fire broke out, they panicked. There were no lights,” explained Kitrat Panphet, Thailand’s national police chief.

Among the survivors, Kaew-udon Poungppany, 24, recounted his desperate attempt to save his younger brother, who tragically did not survive. “I grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed it at the door… but I couldn’t go any further. I heard people screaming,” he shared, his voice choked with emotion.

Eyewitness Accounts Highlight Desperation

Usa Tadsree, a 41-year-old survivor, described the moments leading up to the disaster. Stepping outside for a cigarette, she heard a sudden explosion. “There was a boom – a very fast boom… There was no way to get out at all,” she recounted, her voice trembling as she recalled seeing rescuers carrying her friend’s lifeless body just moments after they had shared drinks together. “I lost my mind,” she stated, reflecting on the surreal nature of the tragedy.

Preliminary investigations suggest an electrical short circuit in an air conditioning unit could be responsible for the fire, although an official conclusion has yet to be announced. Local authorities have vowed to conduct a thorough and detailed investigation into the incident.

A History of Fire Safety Negligence

This incident is not an isolated event in Thailand, which has a troubling history of similar tragedies. Despite promises from officials to enhance fire safety regulations following previous disasters, enforcement remains lax. Governor Chatchart Sittipunt noted that flammable decorations on the bar’s ceiling may have exacerbated the fire’s rapid spread. Reports indicate that some victims were found unconscious near the building’s emergency exits, raising concerns about potential obstructions that hindered escape routes.

The response from the community has been poignant, with local citizens stepping in to assist those trapped inside. One motorcyclist, Surin Jaiharn, described helping several individuals escape by using his clothing to extinguish flames on their bodies. “I feel depressed. I saw many deaths, and I do not know the fate of the people I helped,” he lamented.

Government Response and Support for Victims

In the wake of the tragedy, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the bar’s site, where he spoke with witnesses and first responders. He reported that a musician performing at the time of the fire described the scene as one of utter panic, with many seeking refuge in the bathrooms.

As a response to this calamity, the Chatuchak district office has ordered the bar’s closure for 30 days. Additionally, families of the deceased will receive compensation of 29,300 Thai baht (approximately £660), while those receiving medical treatment will be allotted 4,000 baht (about £90).

Why it Matters

This tragic incident underscores a critical need for enhanced fire safety measures and stringent compliance with regulations in public venues. As the community grapples with the loss of life and the trauma inflicted by this disaster, it serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that still exist within Thailand’s nightlife and entertainment sectors. The outcry for justice and accountability must not only honour those lost but also spark meaningful change to prevent future tragedies.
