The controversy erupted in parliament when Conservative shadow minister Claire Coutinho brought forth allegations from whistleblowers within Neso. These insiders assert that control room personnel were instructed to avoid leaving any documentation concerning decisions made to stabilise the power grid during record-high temperatures in late June.
Coutinho stated, “These whistleblowers are coming to me because they are worried that the grid is becoming increasingly unmanageable and they do not have faith that their concerns are being taken seriously internally.” This highlights a concerning atmosphere within the organisation, where staff feel compelled to speak out due to a lack of trust in leadership.
Power Grid Under Pressure
As the UK sweltered under an unprecedented heatwave, the power grid experienced significant stress. Craig Dyke, a director at Neso, stated a “full deep dive” into the system’s operations will be conducted. “Neso has commissioned an independent investigation into recent allegations around decision-making and record-keeping,” he explained, assuring the public that both reports will be made available for scrutiny.
Despite the turmoil, Neso has maintained that the grid operated securely throughout the heatwave, asserting that frequency and voltage levels remained within statutory limits. However, the cloud of suspicion and the accusations of risk management failures could have long-lasting repercussions.
