California Set for a Shark Surge: Juvenile Great Whites on the Move Amid El Niño Conditions

As summer unfolds, California is bracing for one of its most shark-filled seasons in years, with a notable influx of juvenile great white sharks migrating from the warmer waters of Mexico to the cooler coastline of the western United States. This remarkable phenomenon is largely attributed to the El Niño climate pattern, which is significantly affecting ocean temperatures and marine life.

A Changing Ocean: The Impact of El Niño

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed the emergence of El Niño in early June, a climate event known for its capacity to reshape weather patterns globally. This year, forecasters expect a particularly potent iteration, which could lead to increased ocean temperatures and unusual marine migration patterns.

Dr Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, notes that this year has already shown an unprecedented number of juvenile white sharks appearing along the California coast, a trend that began earlier than usual. “We started seeing baby white sharks in February, which we’ve never seen before. Typically, this occurs in April,” Lowe explained.

The link between El Niño and shark behaviour is well-established. Warmer ocean temperatures can compel cold-water species, including great whites, to shift their habitats further north in search of more suitable environments. “When it gets too warm, the white sharks don’t like it, and that drives them into California,” Lowe added.

An Abundance of Juveniles

Great white sharks, known for their impressive size, typically measure between 10 to 20 feet as adults. However, the majority of those spotted off California’s coast this summer are juveniles, ranging from 6 to 9 feet in length. These younger sharks are often found in shallower waters, where they hunt for food, including stingrays, fish, and squid.

Lowe anticipates that California’s warmer waters will attract not just white sharks but a host of other species as well. “In 2015, a significant influx of smooth hammerhead sharks followed schools of mahi-mahi into the area,” he recalled. This year, he expects similar occurrences, hinting at the potential arrival of bull and tiger sharks as well.

Ensuring Safety for Humans and Sharks

In light of the increased shark presence, state wildlife officials are taking proactive measures to safeguard both beachgoers and the sharks themselves. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has introduced emergency regulations to limit the use of specific fishing gear along beaches and piers, which could inadvertently ensnare these protected species.

John Ugoretz, a programme manager at the department, highlighted the dangers posed by modern fishing equipment, which could result in serious injuries to both humans and sharks. “We’ve already observed a significant rise in interactions between people and white sharks in southern California,” he noted, emphasizing the necessity of responsible behaviour in the water.

Despite these concerns, both Lowe and Ugoretz stress that shark attacks in California remain exceedingly rare. Since 1950, there have been fewer than 250 reported incidents involving sharks, with only 17 resulting in fatalities. “We always assumed that increasing shark populations would lead to more bites, but what we’re witnessing in California is quite the opposite,” Lowe stated.

Understanding Shark Behaviour

The reality is that sharks have become accustomed to human presence along California’s beaches. “These sharks are around so many people, and they recognise that we’re not prey,” Lowe explained. He likened sightings of sharks to rare encounters with wildlife, such as mountain lions or bears in the forest. “If you do encounter one, you’re lucky to witness such a majestic creature in its natural habitat.”

Over the past two decades, ongoing research has revealed that white sharks are intelligent, apex predators with a keen understanding of their environment. “Flash forward 20 years later, based on all our drone data, I swim with these white sharks every day, and I have no qualms doing it,” Lowe said confidently, underscoring the sharks’ ability to differentiate between humans and their natural prey.

While the occasional bite incident does occur, often attributed to mistaken identity, these events are incredibly infrequent compared to the number of sharks and humans sharing the ocean. “As I speak to you, a white shark is swimming by a surfer or swimmer who doesn’t even know it’s there,” Lowe observed.

Understanding these changes is crucial for fostering coexistence between these magnificent creatures and the humans who enjoy their ocean home.
