In a dramatic escalation of rhetoric, US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, stating that military strikes targeting the nation’s bridges and power plants could commence next week unless Tehran agrees to resume negotiations. This announcement was made during a Fox News interview as the US and Iran engage in what has become a protracted exchange of hostilities, marking the fourth consecutive day of military confrontations between the two nations.

Military Threats and Strategic Maneuvers

In an interview aired on Tuesday, Trump declared, “Next week it gets really bad for them. We’re going to knock out all their power plants. We’re going to knock out all their bridges unless they get to the table and negotiate.” His comments follow a period of heightened military activity, including the US resuming a blockade of Iranian ports and conducting airstrikes on Iranian military sites. The US Central Command (Centcom) reported that these strikes targeted numerous Iranian military installations near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, aimed at diminishing Iran’s capability to threaten commercial shipping routes.

Back in April, Trump had previously threatened to bomb civilian infrastructure in Iran, a move that elicited condemnation from UN human rights chief Volker Türk, who highlighted the war crime implications of targeting civilian structures as outlined in the Geneva Conventions. Despite these criticisms, Trump hinted at further military actions, stating, “I’ll save the energy targets for last, but ultimately we’ll hit energy targets.”

Escalating Regional Conflict

The situation has grown increasingly volatile, with both sides trading military strikes. Iranian forces have reportedly launched missiles and drones at US assets located in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, while the US has accused Iran of deliberately targeting civilian vessels, resulting in casualties among civilian crew members. A recent attack on a Cypriot-flagged tanker off the coast of Oman led to the death of an Indian sailor, underscoring the hazardous environment in the region.

As tensions continue to escalate, shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed significantly, raising concerns over global oil supply chains. The strait is a crucial maritime route, and the increasing military presence from both nations has provoked fears of wider conflict.

Economic Ramifications and Diplomatic Fallout

In a bid to strengthen its position, Trump has also indicated a shift in strategy regarding the Strait of Hormuz, proposing a replacement of a controversial 20% fee on shipping with “massive” trade and investment deals from Gulf states. This announcement came shortly before the resumption of military operations against Iran. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment
