A remarkable discovery in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has unveiled a new species of monkey, distinguished by its striking pinkish-orange lips and black face. This previously undocumented primate, known locally as ‘Likweli’, inhabits the dense canopies of Lomami National Park, marking only the fifth new African monkey species identified in the past 75 years.
Discovery of Colobus congoensis
The identification of this unique monkey has its origins in 2008 when conservationists first encountered this elusive creature, capturing only a blurry image. A decade later, a dedicated international research team, prompted by a subsequent sighting, initiated a comprehensive study that confirmed the monkey as a distinct species. The findings have been published in the journal PLoS One, showcasing the collaborative efforts of researchers from the DRC, the United States, and Germany.
PhD student Junior Amboko from Florida Atlantic University played a pivotal role in this research, which included audio recordings, photographic documentation, and extensive genetic analysis. Amboko expressed his exhilaration at the discovery: “It was an amazing feeling to look into the face of an animal that so few people knew existed.”
The Role of Local Knowledge
The integration of local knowledge was crucial in the research process. The team conducted interviews in 52 villages surrounding the monkey’s habitat, revealing that only residents from eight villages had ever spotted the Likweli. This highlights the species’ secretive nature and its tendency to remain hidden among the treetops, underscoring the challenges of wildlife conservation in remote areas.
Given the local name, the species has been scientifically designated as Colobus congoensis, reflecting the rich biodiversity of the DRC. As part of the broader colobus monkey family, these primates are characterised by their lack of thumbs, which distinguishes them from other monkey species. Professor Kate Detwiler, also from Florida Atlantic University, noted the ecological significance of colobus monkeys, stating, “They are critical herbivores of the canopy, playing a vital role in seed processing and germination within the forest.”
Behaviour and Conservation Efforts
The Likweli monkey is not only visually unique; it also possesses a distinct “roaring” call that often allows them to be heard before they are seen. However, their elusive behaviour raises concerns about their population size and distribution. Researchers believe that these monkeys are rare and likely limited to specific forest areas where they can access sufficient food and suitable habitats.
Due to hunting pressures, conservationists are hopeful that the formal classification of Colobus congoensis will facilitate protective measures for this new species. The research team plans to conduct further surveys to estimate the population and gain insights into the monkeys’ behaviour and ecological requirements.
