A recent study has unveiled a startling consequence of climate change: the world is losing an average of nearly a week’s worth of sleep each year due to rising nighttime temperatures. Conducted by Climate Central, a prominent US-based climate science organisation, the analysis of over 1,300 cities worldwide highlights that excessive warmth at night is not merely an inconvenience; it is a profound threat to our health and wellbeing.
The Sleep Crisis Unfolding
According to the findings, individuals are losing approximately 56 hours of sleep annually as a result of elevated ambient nighttime temperatures. Alarmingly, more than six of those hours are directly attributable to climate change itself. This research stands out as the first of its kind to quantify sleep lost specifically due to the escalating temperatures exacerbated by human activity.
The report notes, “Climate change and nighttime warming are increasingly impinging on the ability to get a good night’s sleep.” Since the early 1970s, the portion of sleep loss connected to climate change has at least doubled in 1,335 of the cities analysed, with some areas seeing a tripling of this impact.
Disparities Across Regions
Cities in the Middle East are bearing the brunt of these sleep losses. For instance, residents of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates are losing between 55 and 87 hours of sleep each year, with 12 to 16 of those hours directly linked to climate change—equivalent to almost two full nights of lost rest. Similarly, southern India and various Southeast Asian nations report an annual sleep deficit of 78 to 91 hours, with eight to nine hours attributable to climate change.
In West Africa, cities like Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso are not far behind, with an annual sleep loss exceeding 65 hours, 10 to 11 of which are linked to climate change. The repercussions of these figures extend beyond mere inconvenience; they raise critical concerns regarding public health and societal productivity.
The Impact in the United States
In the United States, the analysis revealed that people in 253 cities lost an average of 36 hours of sleep per year due to heightened nighttime temperatures. Of this, about four hours can be directly associated with climate change. The most affected areas include states like Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada. Alarmingly, sleep loss linked to climate change has increased from just over one hour per year in the early 1970s to roughly four hours by the 2020s.
With sleep deprivation having been tied to various health issues—such as impaired mood, cognitive decline, and increased cardiovascular risks—the implications of this growing trend cannot be overstated. The report warns that even modest disruptions to sleep can accumulate, leading to significant health consequences over time.
Vulnerable Populations at Greater Risk
Certain demographics face heightened vulnerability to the impacts of warmer nights. The report indicates that adults over 65 are experiencing the effects of increased nighttime heat more than twice as severely as middle-aged adults, while individuals in lower-middle-income countries are almost three times more affected than those in wealthier nations. Women and people living in already hot climates are also noted to suffer disproportionately.
As Europe and the UK contend with heatwaves that have resulted in tragic excess mortality—10,650 additional deaths reported during a single week in late June—the urgency of addressing these climate impacts becomes even clearer.
The Cooling Dilemma
While air conditioning can mitigate some of the adverse effects of rising temperatures, it does not eliminate them entirely. Research indicates that access to cooling solutions is often tied to socio-economic status, leading to stark inequalities in many hot regions, including parts of South Asia and Africa. As of 2021, only about 35 per cent of households globally had access to air conditioning, raising further concerns about the ability to cope with these increasing temperatures.
The analysis employed data on daily minimum temperatures alongside estimates of what those temperatures would be without human-induced climate change, covering a six-year period from 2020 to 2025 and historical data from the early 1970s.
