This alarming statistic comes from a recent study conducted by Climate Central, a US-based climate science organisation, which analysed data from 1,338 cities around the globe. The findings indicate a troubling trend: the sleep deprivation attributed to climate change has more than doubled since the early 1970s, raising significant concerns about public health and well-being.

The Sleep Crisis: A Global Overview

The research highlights that people are losing nearly a week of sleep annually, with climate change directly responsible for over six hours of this loss. This effect has been particularly pronounced in regions that experience high ambient nighttime temperatures, which are escalating due to global warming. The study marks a significant advancement in quantifying the impact of climate change on sleep patterns, effectively connecting environmental changes with human health outcomes.

In the Middle East, the losses are particularly severe. Residents in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates suffer between 55 to 87 hours of sleep deprivation each year, with 12 to 16 hours of this directly linked to climate change—equating to nearly two full nights per year. Similarly, southern India and several Southeast Asian nations report annual sleep losses of between 78 and 91 hours, with approximately nine hours attributable to rising temperatures.

Regional Disparities in Sleep Loss

The analysis further reveals that urban centres across West Africa, including Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso, are not immune to this crisis either, with individuals losing upwards of 65 hours of sleep annually, of which 10 to 11 hours are due to climate-induced temperature increases. In the United States, the situation, while less severe, still reflects concerning trends: the average sleep loss across 253 cities is about 36 hours per year, with roughly four hours directly linked to climate change. The states most affected include Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada.

Notably, the analysis shows that climate change-related sleep loss in US cities has tripled since the early 1970s, rising from just over one hour to four hours per year by the 2020s. This growing statistic underscores an urgent need for awareness and action surrounding the effects of climate change on public health.

Health Implications of Sleep Deprivation

The implications of this accumulating sleep deficit are grave. Scientific research has established a direct correlation between poor sleep and detrimental effects on mood, cognitive performance, and overall health, including cardiovascular and immune function. The analysis warns that even minor reductions in sleep can be harmful, particularly during prolonged heat spells, as many individuals already experience insufficient sleep.

Certain demographics are at even greater risk. The study notes that older adults, particularly those over 65, are more than twice as likely to suffer from sleep deprivation associated with warmer nights compared to their middle-aged counterparts. Additionally, individuals residing in lower-middle-income countries face nearly three times the impact of climate-related sleep loss compared to those in wealthier nations. This disparity highlights the unequal burdens of climate change, affecting vulnerable populations disproportionately.

The Role of Air Conditioning and Accessibility

While air conditioning can mitigate the effects of rising temperatures, it does not provide a complete solution. Globally, only around 35 per cent of households had access to air conditioning in 2021, leaving many without effective means to cope with the heat. The disparity in access to cooling solutions is often tied to socio-economic status, particularly in hot regions like South Asia and parts of Africa. The study emphasises that even in wealthier areas, hotter nights continue to disrupt sleep, suggesting that the problem transcends mere access to technology.

The research employed observed daily minimum temperatures alongside estimates of what those temperatures would have been without human-induced climate change, spanning a six-year period from 2020 to 2025 and comparing it to data from the early 1970s.
