In a significant escalation of hostilities, Iran has intensified its military assaults on US bases situated in Gulf countries, while the United States has retaliated with a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian sites. This latest round of conflict marks the sixth consecutive day of renewed violence, jeopardising a preliminary agreement aimed at ending the ongoing war.

Iranian Strikes Across the Gulf

Tehran has claimed responsibility for attacks on various military installations in the region, including targets in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The Iranian government maintains that these actions are part of its strategy to counter what it perceives as threats from the US and its allies. The country’s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, asserted that Iran sees no obligation to adhere to any agreement that fails to serve its national interests, underscoring a commitment to maintain its influence in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

US Response: A Wave of Strikes

In retaliation, the US military executed a prolonged six-hour series of strikes across multiple locations in Iran, aiming to diminish Tehran’s capacity to threaten maritime activities in the Strait of Hormuz. Targets included command centres, air defence systems, and coastal surveillance facilities, particularly around Bandar Abbas and Greater Tunb Island. Reports from Iranian state media indicated that explosions were audible in various cities, and air defence systems were activated in Tehran in response to the incoming attacks.

As the violence escalates, US allies in the Gulf have reported their own countermeasures. Kuwait’s military successfully intercepted drone attacks, while Bahrain’s interior ministry urged citizens to remain vigilant and seek safety.

Renewed Blockade and Global Repercussions

The situation further deteriorated with the US announcing a renewed blockade on Iranian ports, a move that reverses previous concessions made following a memorandum of understanding between the two nations last month. This blockade has significant implications, particularly considering the Strait of Hormuz’s crucial role in global oil transportation. The US also reported firing upon and disabling a Curacao-flagged oil tanker that was allegedly attempting to breach the blockade.

In response to these actions, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a stern warning, suggesting that the US should brace for the potential closure of additional oil and gas export routes critical to both American and allied interests.

Diplomatic Gesture Amidst Hostilities

Despite the ongoing exchanges of fire, President Donald Trump acknowledged what he interpreted as a conciliatory gesture from Iran, following the release of American detainee Dena Karari, who had been held since December 2024. Trump expressed appreciation for the gesture on his Truth Social platform, framing it as a potential opening for renewed dialogue. Karari is reportedly en route back to the United States, as confirmed by her attorney.

Why it Matters

The current escalation between Iran and the US poses significant risks not only for regional stability but also for the global economy, particularly in the energy sector. With oil prices surging due to disrupted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the stakes have never been higher. As both nations grapple with their military strategies, the possibility for diplomatic resolution appears increasingly tenuous, leaving the international community to watch and wait as tensions continue to rise.
