A remarkable discovery has emerged from the lush forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a new monkey species, characterised by its striking pinkish-orange lips and black face, has been officially identified. This significant finding, documented in the journal *PLoS One*, highlights the ongoing importance of conservation efforts in the region and underscores the rich biodiversity still awaiting exploration.
Discovery in Lomami National Park
The enigmatic primate, native to the dense canopies of Lomami National Park, was first glimpsed by conservationists in 2008, although initial photographic evidence was scant and blurry. Ten years later, subsequent sightings prompted an international research team to embark on a dedicated mission aimed at confirming the species’ existence. Led by Junior Amboko, a PhD student at Florida Atlantic University, the study employed a combination of audio recordings, photographic documentation, and genetic analysis to unveil this previously unknown species.
This assessment has led to the designation of the monkey as *Colobus congoensis*, placing it amongst the fifth new African monkey species recognised in the last 75 years. Amboko expressed his awe at the experience, stating it was “an amazing feeling” to encounter a species that had remained largely unknown to the scientific community.
Understanding the Shy Likweli
Locally referred to as “Likweli,” these monkeys exhibit a shy disposition, often retreating high into the treetops where they are difficult to observe. The research team, which included experts from the US, Germany, and the DRC, engaged with residents across 52 villages in proximity to the monkey’s habitat. Remarkably, only eight villages reported sightings of the Likweli, highlighting the secretive nature of this species.
Professor Kate Detwiler, a key figure in the research, elaborated on the ecological significance of the colobus monkey family, noting their vital role as herbivores within the canopy ecosystem. Their lack of thumbs is a notable characteristic, and they are believed to play a crucial role in seed processing and forest germination. The unique coloration of the Likweli’s face may serve as a visual signal for mating or social identification among peers.
